In the linux (unix) world, you can have an arbitrary number of (virtual) screens. vncserver by default will start a new such screen, in which you then can launch applications etc., without interfering at all with who's logged in at the moment, if anyone.

What you want, is controlling an existing X session. This cannot be done, to the best of my knowledge, with the 'vncserver' package and programs.

This is a FAQ actually: http://www.realvnc.com/faq.html#x0

Turns out this is possible with vncserver version 4

Install vnc4server to get this package, by the way.
