Dev team: add .NET Framework 4 support to Debian..Q

Postby verwijs69 » 2010-07-31 10:07

..
..

Request for the Debian and/or "Mono" dev team:
..
please try to add .NET Framework 4 support to Debian (Lenny) as soon as possible, and also do some rigorous testing with "Mono Develop"... I use this for "opensimulator" (.org) source code.. for creating "Second Life"-like region of my own....

thank you very much

well if there was a way to convert C# source code to Linux C/C++/FORTRAN or other Linux based program language, you wouldn't need .NET
but for "opensimulator" this is way to complex....

but Mono and .NET works pretty good, no big problems...

Moved to Debian Development (it didn't belong in System Configuration by a long shot.)

@verwijs69: Not many active Debian developers actually hang out here. We are just users of Debian, for the most part. If you have a serious request for Debian development, you will probably be better off posting to a Debian mailing list.

One of the reasons I left opensuse years ago, was when they added mono to it, and the BLOAT skyrocketed. It's a huge fat pig, and suse made sure too many things depended on it, so you couldn't uninstall it.

If Debian ever does support mono, it better be optional. I for one don't want that bloated crap on my machine, but that's just me.

That is one of the reason I have yet to install Gnome. Quite a few useful apps rely on mono, to list just a few, Tomboy, Banshee, Moonlight. Luckily there are several apps that are as good if not better.

I see a plenty of mono packages in the Debian repos. If however you need the latest and greatest you can always download the source and compile it yourself. Just as a general note, Lenny has been Debian's stable for about couple of years now and stable does not get new functionality updates. So, unless backports.org supports it or you can get a deb made for Lenny from another source you will have to compile it on your own. I am sure it will be a great learning experiance if you haven't done it before, If you have then I hear it's apiece of cake or a walk in the park.

WHOW..!! compile mono with .NET 4.xx support myself on Debian... that a totally different ballgame, you need some SERIOUS programing knowledge. and know how Linux kernel works. thats nothing like compiling a simple source code... i don't think I can do that...
