Getting S3 Unichrome IGP to work

Postby Zosimos » 2010-12-12 01:36

Having struggled through the basic installation, I am now trying to get the various enhanced features of this laptop working. It is an Everex Stepnote NM3500W, manufactured in 2006. It has a FIC motherboard with the VIA P4M800 Pro chipset and and Intel Celeron 1.7 Ghz CPU. Included in that VIA chipset is an S3G UniChrome Pro IGP graphics adapter. This is a very cheapsh*t device. :( But after googling all over and reading many threads by other people trying to get it to work, I've found some modelines that have made it work. At least to the degree that the desktop actually fits on the screen instead of being much too large and making it difficult or impossible to even reach the menus. But as far as I can tell, what this does is treats it as a VESA adapter and doesn't use the accelerated functions. Also, only the default/max resolution, 1280x800, actually works. (But that's certainly better than the giant desktop that you cannot access in the default setup mode.) The other modes send the screen into chaos and I have to wait for the automatic reset to recover. Can anyone tell me what I have found here? Shouldn't it be possible to use other modes than the maximum?

Well, call it vesa, but you are using the openchrome driver. If you running Debian Lenny, I found that the Squeeze openchrome driver solved a lot of similar problems for an old machine with the KM400 chipset.

With the openchrome driver, you are going to get excellent 2D performance. However, Compiz is a no-go with openchrome. With GNOME, the most "enhancement" you are going to get is by enabling Metacity Compositing. The compositing will give you some drop shadows. My main system uses the VIA K8M890CE/K8N890CE [Chrome 9] chipset and the openchrome driver. I get flawless video playback and have had no problems at all with any video issues. Just do not get your heart set on Compiz or you will be disappointed.

As for the screen display, I have only used standard monitors (1024x768 and 1280x1024) which were automatically chosen. I never had to set any modelines manually. Are you using Lenny or Squeeze? If using Lenny, I think there was an updated openchrome driver in the backports, but I cannot remember now. I am using Squeeze on everything these days.

OK, it turns out that my modelines are actually not being used. It's just setting up something automatically and the only thing that really matters is the virtual size that forces it to stay within the capacity of the screen. I deleted the modelines and it still works fine, but doesn't offer any other modes than default in the config panel. Here is my Xorg.0.log from a successful boot. Can anyone tell me what is going on and if it is possible to get other modes to work? Especially without having to force it into the 'virtual' size?

OK, here is MOST OF my Xorg.0.log file. Long list of detected modes deleted so it fits within the arbitrary limit set by this board.

Re: Getting S3 Unichrome IGP to work

Postby Zosimos » 2010-12-13 20:13

OK, it looks like I've got the major problems worked out, though the solutions are messy. By using VBEmodes and VBESaveRestore in the xorg.conf I can get video acceleration and even 3D with the mesa drivers without getting locked up. But switching modes, including simply booting up or logging out, is very, very, very slooow.

What I still cannot do is use any other mode than the maximum 1280x800. Granted, this is the mode I would be using most of the time. But I don't know if I might need to use some other mode for some specific reason in the future. So, I'd still like to know how I could get it to use any other modes?

The Windows drivers allow 1280x800, 1024x768 and 800x600 in either 16 or 32 bit color. Is there some way to poke around in the Windows system files and get the timing settings for those modes?
