So I'm running Debian 9 XFCE. VLC is not opening at all for me. I re-installed my system in case something was broken, but nope, VLC still doesn't open. I typed vlc in the terminal and this is the message I am getting:
VLC media player 3.0.2 Vetinari (revision 3.0.2-0-gd7b653cf14)
[000056052c1651a0] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
Gdk-Message: vlc: Fatal IO error 2 (No such file or directory) on X server :0.0.

Re: VLC not starting
Debian pushed it as a security upgrade into Stretch.
Can you fiddle around with the video output settings and switch it from automatic to xv or x11? If you run vlc from a terminal, you'll probably see some complaints about that.

I changed my icons to Adwaita, and I was able to open VLC, wow. I have always been using Ultra Flater icons. I may have to find different icons. Thank you.Bulkley wrote:Do a search on the Net for Gdk-Message: vlc: Fatal IO error 2. You will find lots of hits. One that I saw blamed an incorrect icon set. Try Adwaita or the Gnome set.
Re: VLC not starting
it might help to tell VLC to use native skins instead of Qt (which in turn tries to get themes & icons from GTK, i think).
