X.org HowTo (newbie)

#1 Post by Granden »

Hi!
I installed debian 3.1 yesterday and want a X server I wanted to go for the X.org cause I have heard much good of it, to bad there is no .deb file for it, and I dont understand the official documentation on HowTo install X.org, anyone who have a good guide for me, on another forum I got this response http://lfs.osuosl.org/blfs/view/stable/ ... .html#xorg
But I dont understand the first part of it, this part Kernel Compilation Settings So that I owuld need help with or another HowTo.

Im not a total newbie I have used debian before but then I did go for the Desktop ENviroment and did get Xfree86, but now I want to have X.org and FluxBox so I have some basic knowledge but not very much.

It is much easier to install a Debian package.
Check Debian backports here:
http://backports.org/

or you could try the package from Ubuntu.

EDIT: A backport is just a new line ot the source.list? to get newer package? Does all of those backports have the x.org ?

The new line in your /etc/apt/sources.list file gives you access to that source. There are dependencies for the xorg package that are also on the site.

After you edit your sources.list file, you need to do:
apt-get update

before the new source is available to apt.

Instructions on the backport site:
Debian Backports wrote: If you want to give it a try, add this line to your sources.list:

deb http://people.debian.org/~nobse/xorg-x11/ sarge main

There's a known bug when upgrading xfree86-common, run "update-rc.d -f remove xfree86-common" to fix it. If you have other problems, please don't file bugreports against the Debian Bug Tracking Systems, instead contact the debian-x mailinglist.
