Re: ffmpeg missing
It's been replaced by avconv in libav-tools.
The deb-multimedia repo has system builds of the real ffmpeg, but the libraries may have unpredictable effects on media players.
One solution is to use static builds of ffmpeg that you just download into a directory and extract. They even support more codecs than Debian, such as h.265 (hevc): http://johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/

Re: ffmpeg missing
In the past, the DMO ffmpeg libraries have broken the Debian builds of VLC and Mplayer..but that could be fixed by using the DMO builds of those programs. It just had to be explained how to fix that over and over and over and over.
