Gnome freezes (locks up)

#1 Post by mike-the-mikado »

I'm using Debian Wheezy and Gnome frequently locks up. Title bars and buttons disappear. I try to keep my system up to date and the problem has persisted.

I'm able to use control+alt+f1 to login and kill gnome-session, but this logs out all users.

I haven't spotted any consistent cause.

Any suggestions on diagnosing the problem?

Could you give us your hardware specs? We need more information to help you.

Well, your hardware looks alright. I thought originally it might be a graphics problem but your Intel graphics is well supported. Do you have a lot of apps open when the system locks up? I ask this because I am wondering if you are running out of memory and it is causing the system to lock up.

I hadn't noticed a correlation with having lots of applications open. As I can get a terminal window, I guess I could check memory usage (I'm not sure how though).

Since my original post, I had wondered if it might be associated with flash player (inside Firefox)...

The "top" command will show you memory use. Also, system monitor displays memory use. Top shows you what is running though and you can stop it by pressing the q key.

Edit: For flash in Firefox turn off hardware acceleration in preferences. Right click on a flash video that is playing and turn off hardware acceleration in the flash player itself too. I do both of these on my system with Intel graphics. Hardware acceleration is not supported in Linux anyway.

Thanks for the tip on disabling flash acceleration. I've given that a try. Of course, since it was an intermittent problem, the better the news, the longer I'll have to wait.

Disabling hardware acceleration in Flash seems to have solved the problem.
