using awesome wm as a replacement

I've been using awesome as a replacement wm and the bar steals the applets from the de. Any idea how to stop this?

Yes, I meant statusbar.

I only want to use awesome for managing my widows. No clocks, widgets, or any of that. I've played with the config and no luck so far. Advice?
