I can't tell you why it is slower but Mozilla is a slow program.
When you want your webserving to speed up i reconment you to install Firefox.

(mozilla 1.7-alpha should be much faster but i didn't test it yet!)

I have always had great luck using Opera as a browser....it works just fine with Linux, and FreeBsd, and even QNX. It is very fast even with my dialup modem......you can download the sources for alldifferent flavors of Linux at

www.opera.com

I found a tweak fot firebird on the gentoo forum:
  • Enter 'about:config' into the address bar in firefox and right click on these options to change their values.

    browser.turbo.enable - true

    network.http.max-connections - 30

    network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server - 8

    network.http.pipelining - true

    network.http.pipelining.maxrequests - 8

    nglayout.initialpaint.delay - 100

Great find. There's a lot of good tweaks available there besides the ones assoicated with download speed.
