KDE sucks. Why would you expect it to start?
Best solution would be to install another DE.

In the future, you can also install another desktop, such as xfce4, that won't refuse to start if you have desktop effects enabled that require openGL, then something happens to your video driver that disables openGL. Then at least you'll have a GUI.

That said, KDE has always failed gracefully in 'no opengl' situations, at least for me.
