xfce4 4.12 is released

And it seems to be backportable to Wheezy rather easily, maybe even Squeeze. I'm working on Wheezy-compatible packages for the MX 14 test repo now, and we do plan on rebuilding those on a Jessie base for MX 15.

This is to forestall any questions I can see coming up as to how to install 4.12 on Wheezy and Jessie, since there were a few of them when 4.10 was released.

Thanks for the heads up and TIA for the effort to backport. Some of xfce's new features look yummy.

Well, I'll spring it on my victims--I mean testers--when finished. I incorporated the patch from webupd8's PPA to have Thunar have a split-pane mode, so we'll see if that breaks anything.

FWIW, there has been discussion about xfce4 4.12 being the default DE in Devuan even though it won't be in Jessie. It will also be disinfected of systemd. So Devuan would be moving ahead of Debian with this decision.

I did remove some systemd build-depends from one package, and still works fine. One from sourced from Ubuntu Vivid baffled me (xfce-taskmanager 1.1.0), since it refused to build until I modified the rules file, and I cannot see any freaking way how it would have built on Ubuntu without that change.

@stevepusser . . . are you keeping up with devuan developments? If you start packaging systemd-free stuff, that could be a nice contribution to the devuan effort.

The thought of Xfce being default makes me :D

I find Gnome and KDE annoying and difficult to accomplish seemingly simple tasks.

Plus I love that Xfce can be used from the keyboard, despite being a GUI.

w00t this is great news indeed!

Will it be included in Jessie tho? I assume since Jessie is frozen, so only bugfixes (on 4.10) will be done to Jessie.

As announced above, it will be the default DE for Devuan Jessie.

I built this for the 4.12 xfce repo, it will also build on MX-14 and Jessie's 4.10. It's still better than the improved appearance settings in 4.12, IMO.

Don't know what Devuan's policy is on adding non-Debian sourced packages, but it would be a nice addition.

4.10 will be default on Debian Jessie. Only bug fixes will go through. Hopefully though there will be backports for people who don't move to Devuan- the settings in particular look like real improvements.

And if they would just add window tabbing, I'd be tempted to forget all about KDE.

Looking forward, as always, to see what you come up with, stevepusser.

Yes, they are. 8) Finished and tested the amd64 packages, which is about 85% of the work. I don't have to edit 3 files per package to rebuild them on the 32-bit platform. :D

Finished and uploaded the packages. So far the testers love it :D It's pretty amazing, the whole shebang, 32 and 64 bit, the source code, a lot of debugging packages, and the outside xfce-theme-manager and compositing settings packages all fit in a less than 90 MB zipped archive.

I have not seen any important desktop environments ever get into the debian-backports repo. It's up to Devuan if they want to roll their own backports, I don't know what their policy is. I did also pull in a newer 2.0 xfce4-volumed package from Ubuntu source that fixed a volume control bug in MX 14 with pulseaudio--I don't know if that crops up in Jessie's 4.10 xfce.
