Dual graphic card [Intel/ATI], fglrx and problems

#1 Post by francst »

Hi everybody.
I'm not so new on Debian (I used Lenny for almost a year, but when it became stable just a few weeks earlier. 2009?) but I'm anything but an expert.

However, I tried to install Debian Wheezy and GNOME 3 on an old laptop I found, but I have some problems with drivers and X.
Here it is my graphic cards:

Code: Select all

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series]
I tried to use the radeon free driver, but power management doesn't work at all (the CPU temperature rises to 80°C/176°F and higher).
So I installed the fglrx driver following the official guide, but when I tried to reboot the X server doesn't start.
Here it is the startx log:

Code: Select all

The only way to enter in the graphical mode is to cancel the default xorg.conf above, but when I do this GNOME 3 starts in fallback mode and many software doesn't work due to the X server problems.

I don't even know what kind of driver I'm using now.
This is my lsmod | grep video answer:

Code: Select all

uvcvideo 57744 0
videodev 70889 1 uvcvideo
v4l2_compat_ioctl32 16655 1 videodev
media 18148 2 videodev,uvcvideo
usbcore 128741 4 ehci_hcd,usbhid,uvcvideo
i2c_core 23876 6 i2c_i801,i2c_algo_bit,drm,drm_kms_helper,i915,videodev
video 17683 1 i915
thermal_sys 18040 3 thermal,processor,video
I don't see fglrx, but the radeon driver is correctly blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/ and the lshw -c display | grep driver answer give:

Code: Select all

configuration: driver=fglrx_pci latency=0
configuration: driver=i915 latency=0
I tried to look for a solution on the Internet, but I don't find anything that helps me. I hope in you.
Thanks in advance to all of you that try to solve this mess.

Hello!

I think posting the complete /var/log/Xorg.0.log could help.

My guess is that your xorg.conf only contains the section needed for your graphics card.
xorg.conf needs sections for other devices, like mouse and keyboard too if I remember things right.
https://wiki.debian.org/Xorg could be a good place to start.

I think you could get around it my renaming your xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-fglrx.conf

My system is running without any xorg.conf, wheezy seems to autoconfigure X for me and just picks up the section needed for the graphics card from the file 20-fglrx.conf in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory.

Maybe my dirty solution doesn't work for you, but posting your complete /var/log/Xorg.0.log will be helpful for others looking at the problem.
