Excuse my English. Maybe you erased the K menu. Right click on panel and put the menú applet again.

Think i have found problem

appears i had installed a couple of unstable / testing packeages by mistake

this appears to have caused various problems with the Xserver (XFREE86)

i did a reinstall and everything appears fine

thankyou everyone for you help and comments
