How to auto enable numlock on GDM login screen?

Postby bobzr » 2016-01-23 15:25

I'm on Debian testing Gnome 3.18 and I searched, tried, searched and tried... no way! numlock will always stays off whenever I reboot and reach login screen.
...oh and yes I checked bios settings > numlock is on
- installed numlockx
- added those lines to /etc/gdm3/Init/Default (if [ -x /usr/bin/numlockx ]; then /usr/bin/numlockx on fi)
- checked dconf gnome /settings-daemon /peripherals /keyboard remember-numlock-state: true
....
I think I tried all that has already been suggested in old threads of this forum.
Ok it's not a big issue, but I can't believe there's no way to do this in Debian ;)
Any hint will be much appreciated.

I have the same question without answer!
At boot time there is the bios, in gnome session time there is the setting
Code: Select all
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.keyboard remember-numlock-state true

but nothing at login time!

Why do you say that, it looks to me like it is right on topic:
Activating Numlock on Bootup

Using a separate service

Install the package systemd-numlockonttyAUR from the AUR.
Then enable the numLockOnTty service.

Alternatively, if you do not want to install an aur package to implement this, you can simply create a service file in /etc/systemd/system like:

Code: Select all
 [Unit]
Description=Switch on numlock from tty1 to tty6

[Service]
ExecStart=/bin/bash -c 'for tty in /dev/tty{1..6};do /usr/bin/setleds -D +num < \"$tty\";done'

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Note: The filename should have a .service suffix, e.g. numlock1to6.service.
Do not forget to enable the service after you create it.

The question is perhaps not clear enough: it concerns the login GDM (3 of course!).

Head_on_a-Stick and the arch wiki are right on the money.

Put this in your .xinitrc and get rid of GDM, you need it like another hole in the head.

Code: Select all
numlockx &

save/exit/reboot

My .xinitrc:
Code: Select all
firefox &
setxkbmap -option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp
xsetroot -solid black
unclutter -idle 2 &
numlockx &

exec icewm
Devuan Jessie - IceWM - vimperator - no DM
