I used the link in your signature to get to MX repo & Packages for MX-19, there are 3 packages for conky, should I install all these 3 packages?

conky-toggle-mx_19.11_all.deb
conky-manager-dbgsym_2.4+dfsg1-2mx19+1_amd64.deb
conky-manager_2.4+dfsg1-2mx19+1_amd64.deb
Debian 12 Gnome on a MSI H61M-P25 (B3) PC & on a Dell Latitude E6410 & HP EliteBook 8540p Laptops.
LMDE 6 on a Panasonic ToughBook CF-C1 Laptop.
Bodhi Linux 7 on a HP Compaq DC5750 Small Form Factor PC.
Windows 11 on a Intel DH55TC PC.

You don't need the dbgsym one, that's for debugging. And conky-toggle-mx just enables you to switch Conky on and off.

The MX version of conky-manager is a dfsg-safe rebuild (Debian Free Software Guidelines) where the built-in conky themes have been removed, mostly because they included non-free or even pirated fonts along with the theme, or we could not determine what license applied at all. We replaced those with mx-conky and mx-conky-data, which provides themes that we could feel safe redistributing.

You might still be able to find .7z theme packs for Conky Manager 2 out on the Net that you can load into it--it's been a while since I looked for them.

I noticed that Youtube's recent changes to their API borked VLC's ability to play Youtube URLs, but if you save this page https://git.videolan.org/?p=vlc.git;a=b ... ua;hb=HEAD

as "youtube.luac", then copy it over VLC's existing youtube.luac file, it fixes it. For my 64-bit system, the file lives in

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/vlc/lua/playlist/youtube.luac

but you'll have to change that if you run a different architecture. For MX Linux, since we build our own version of VLC to make sure va-api keeps working, I pushed new rebuilds with that file change patched in.

Kodi 18.5, backported from Experimental, added for Buster through Sid:

https://build.opensuse.org/package/show ... /kodi-18.X

It suggests the spectrum visualization addon, but that doesn't seem to work. Debian has version 1.1 of that, but the matching version for Kodia 18 Leia is 3.0.3. I'll see if I can build that and get it to work.

Turns out that the present Kodi packages have a bug--no subtitles available--because it needs to be built with a newer fontforge-nox than Buster has, and the control file didn't note that . I worked around yet another bug backporting fontforge on the OBS, and updated Kodi packages should be done in an hour or two.

Added Blender 2.8.2 sources for a Buster backport a couple of hours ago, and the amd64 build died a step from the finish line when it ran out of disk space allotted to the build VM. The arm64 build succeeded, so I bumped the disk up to 40 GB and restarted the builds.

Added GIMP 2.10.18 sources for a Buster build, along with some of its newer required libspiro, babl, gegl, and meson ports. That should be finishing up shortly.

Heya Steve, not a high priority or anything, but can you try to finesse building the shadow source package into installable .debs? I know some of the things will conflict with util-linux ( like the su binary ) but would prefer particularly su over the util-linux version. Either by direct replacement, or preferably using the debian-alterantives system.

I know the shadow source package builds fairly easily as I tested it using the old make && make install method in one of my disposable VMs. I would like a proper version installed through the package manager though, and didn't really get anywhere with debuild, even with the already debianized source available through the buster source repo.

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what the "shadow" source package is. :(

In other news, I have updated the Blender for Buster to 2.8.2a, which is a bugfix build, and it's building atm.

Re: conky-manager in MX, we have an updated version in the test repo that claims to support the newer 1.10 conky themes out of the box...

I've also backported Mypaint 2.0.0 for both Buster and Stretch bases for MX, but don't have the time to make and upload OBS sources today.

Added the Mystiq multimedia transcoder, GUI front-end for ffmpeg. I've mostly used its MP4 h265 "no resizing" preset to shrink already highly compressed h.264 movie rips by 20-50% with no loss in quality, using twelve threads provided by my laptop CPU. If your machine doesn't have the horsepower, the h.264 presets won't shrink the file size as much, but are much faster.

I know Handbrake or ffmpeg on the command line can do the same thing, but I really never figured out how to get them to shrink the files so nicely. Mystiq makes it pretty easy--I just load up a batch of movies and let it run overnight.

Updated Mystiq with a patch to add a new MKV preset. Basically the same as the MP4 No resizing, but converting to mkv preserves the embedded subtitle streams that are in most of my movie and TV show rips. :D

Deadbeef updated to fix builds on Sid.

Installed DeadBeef, working nicely.

Installed MystiQ and I'm very impressed. I never quite got a handle on Handbrake and don't do video recoding often enough to usefully learn ffmpeg cli.
I have a Blueray rip of Breaking Bad which took up over 120GB on HD. I tried out several sets of parameters; your new preset was good but had noticeably reduced high frequency in the audio so I ended up being happy with

Code: Select all

-c:v libx265 -preset medium -crf 25 -c:a aac -b:a 192k
which is also a slight increase in video quality from your

Code: Select all

-c:v libx265 -preset medium -crf 28 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -strict -2
. File size is a bit larger - recode from the 2.4GB AVC BR rip ended up at 360MB compared to ~300MB using the Stevo preset.
Note that -strict is not necessary now - https://twitter.com/ffmpeg/status/94326 ... 89?lang=en

@Stevo is it possible (and not exceedingly difficult) to add custom presets?

Looking forward to reclaiming ~100GB on my video HDD. At about 1hr to recode each episode on my i5 6500, it will take several overnight sessions. 8)

As far as I know, you have to patch them into the presets.xml file before compiling the program, which I did for the new MKV preset, but maybe it can also load external presets files--I'll have to research that, and perhaps request it on github. There's also a spot to change some audio settings in a preset, but I think that's broken at the moment--but the setting to copy the original audio does work, so you don't lose anything and it saves a bit of encoding time. I haven't tried tweaking any of the video settings otherwise.

Just updated Mystiq with a new preset as suggested by sunrat above: "MKV H265 No Resizing Higher Quality". Packages should be ready in a few minutes.

Also added VLC 3.0.9.2 backports for Stretch and Buster.
