I've been struggling with this for many hours today and I feel a bit tired of this issue now, so I'm posting here! On 32 bit PC system systems I just install libdvdcss2 and some video codecs, and I can watch DVD movies with Debian. But this new laptop (bought in autumn last year) is a 64 bit computer and so the libraries I have installed for this is 64 bit as well. Now I don't know if that's the source of this problem, but all these video software programs just get me input and output errors, and they don't want to show anything.

Help with this is greatly appreciated!

Can you watch any video at all on your machine, or is it just DVD disks? Since it's a newer machine, if it's all video that has problems, I'm inclined to blame it on video driver issues, which have a chance of being fixed.

It's definitely not a problem with my video driver, so you can exclude that 100%, trust me.

The problem is that I want to watch DVD movies and according to what I already know, it's trying to use a video codec using FFMPEG and it fails with that, as the output also explains. I have a theory that the root of these issues might be able to get solved if I install some missing packages which gives the system something that I really don't know at this point. According to several web searches, I should just install libdvdcss (which I also did) from the VideoLAN repos, and everything should work. It's the same problem I've had on older 32 bit linux systems, but for some reason, applying the exact same methods does not apply to this Debian Jessie (64 bit) system.

I am using the AMD catalyst from AMD webpage and I can watch 4K video on youtube and I don't have any issues with the video driver, what so ever.

OK, that's good.

Debian has a package script called "libdvd-pkg" upstream and in jessie-backports that'll get the source and build the correct libdvdcss2 packages for you, with the right command. If you install it on the command line, it will tell you the command.

This package fetches, compiles from source code and installs library
packages that are necessary to play all video DVDs with media
player of your choice (like VLC, SMplayer, Totem, etc.)

I'd try that first to see if that helps. It's as close as Debian could get to legally including the decrypting code.

Yes, unfortunately I already tried it. It does not solve the problem.

I'm not even sure that libdvdcss is the problem. I can explain one of the "symptoms" which happens with the VLC program if I tries to open a DVD movie. It starts spinning between 3 different DVD devices, although I only have 1 DVD drive. The MPlayer program where I use GUI:s to open it up such as SMPlayer just don't want to open it, although I hear the sound from the DVD drive and it is also displaced correctly on the desktop where I can open up it's content and look at all the .VOB files.

What are the required packages needed by Debian to get DVD playback working (excluding all the possible packages which are not directly supported by Debian?). This system is pretty new (still) and I wouldn't be too surprised if there is any essential packages missing in the system. Do you guys have any ideas on what could be causing this? Should I try with the 32 bit library of libdvdcss (I got special support for 32bit packages) and try and see if that works better? Are there any data that says that 64 bit packages works correctly?

Well, now I'm stumped. 64-bit playback works just fine for the vast majority of users, so that's not the issue. A 32-bit libdvdcss2 is only going to be used by a 32-bit DVD playing program, say if you install the i386 version of VLC on 64-bit by using multiarch.

Can you burn anything to your DVD drive? Maybe you could create a very short DVD video disc with something like DeVeDe, which would be unencrypted and rule out encryption and libdvdcss2 altogether as the problem. Or find out the brand and model of the drive and search to see if any other Linux users have problems with it.

I just got finished burning some AVI video to DVD which I originally created on my older laptop using Debian "Squeeze". It is an 32 bit laptop where I also installed libdvdcss2 and I can watch DVD movies and make backup of my old movies. So I can conclude with this that there is nothing wrong with the DVD drive. It both reads DVD discs, I'm able to burn software on it and run video using different video codecs. Now I'm no expert in creating DVD movies, I've never done that, but this is enough for me to exclude any hardware problem or that the DVD drive is not working correctly with the Linux system.

I still haveto conclude that either this system lacks essential system packages or that the versions of libdvdcss2 that I've tried isn't working correctly with the software I've tried, such as VLC, SMPlayer and Dragonplayer.

I feel I'm back at square 1 at the moment. I will do more google searches, but for now I cannot progress on this matter. If you or anyone else have any ideas to this, do feel free to answer to this topic. It would be nice to get this working!

Hmmm---have you installed anything from deb-multimedia.org? That has a well-deserved reputation for breaking multimedia playback.

Are you saying that you can play back your unencrypted DVD movie disk on Jessie, but not encrypted ones that require libdvdcss2? Exactly what procedure did you use to install the 64-bit libdvdcss2?

Step by step I did that to get libdvdcss2 in the system. My system reports that I have 1.4.0-1~loc installed (64 bit arch). I also have libdvdnav4 version 5.0.1-1 (dvd navigation library).
As the new repos was added to sources.list it also persisted to insert libdvd-pkg (package installer) I have configured it NOT to auto update library version. I don't know if the two
versions of these libraries are compatible with each other. Other than that, something weird that I react upon directly, is that none of my video playing software recognizes that there is any tracks
to play, so I cannot even choose that from the menu, which you normally. I can only see the video tracks if I open up the disc from the desktop by clicking on it's icon and just browse
through it contents with .VOB files.

From my experience SMPlayer is the best program to use to play DVD:s and it has worked on all my previous systems, not this one!

No, I haven't installed anything from deb-mulimedia.org and those repos. isn't active or added to my sources.list file.

Add this to your /etc/apt/sources.list

Now install libdvdcss2

It will install libdvdcss2 1.2.13-0 and it works very well

OK, thank you for your help!

Unfortunately for me, I have already tried that as well. The consequence is that, in my installer program (dselect) I can choose to mark the software for install, but it will not install anything. If I install it by using apt-get install libdvdcss2 it forces me and installs the package: libdvd-pkg which then automatically runs the installer and asks for automatic update AFTER it has installed this other version of libdvdcss2 which is compatible with this installer package.

I'm back to square one. Should I compile the library from source code?

I just installed the exact version of libdvdcss2 that you recommended from the VideoLAN webpage, compiled up and installed successfully to the system. I rebooted the system afterwards to make sure that all system libraries and everything which was left in RAM would not conflict with this in any way. Still no progress. Have you tried MPV? I generally find that MPV will run stuff that other players won't touch. You may have to bypass the on disk menu. Go into the file and run:

I'm doing this on Stretch. If you have Jessie you may need to use a backported MPV although I would try the Jessie version first.

I got the libEGL api installed in the system, but it does not want to use it. I tried to run the program with root privileges but gives the same output. So we can conclude that that isn't working.

What bothers me the most as that none of my video playing software programs are unable to detect any tracks or any information from the discs. With the lsdvd I'm at least able to get the relevant information from the DVD and for example it looks like this:

khelben1979, I notice your Swedish location. Do European DVDs have the same technical standards as North American? The old VHS players used different speeds. Someone loaned me a DVD purchased in New Zealand and it would not play on my machine until I changed my clock to NZ time. Is it possible that we are running into something unexpected like that?

There does not seem to be a libEGL.so.1 in the Debian repositories. However, there is a libegl1-mesa. Will that solve the problem?

Yes, mpv in Jessie depends on libegl1-mesa, which provides that missing EGL library: https://packages.debian.org/jessie/amd6 ... a/filelist

I have to wonder exactly how you are installing packages, or if you're installing the correct architecture for your system, if mpv makes that complaint.

European video DVD disks do use a different format than US ones; PAL instead of NTSC, not to mention the whole region mess. But VLC should be able to play both formats; it's standalone players that have problems.

I would urge the use of a 64-bit Live USB to test the playback with a known set of packages.

Maybe it's time to go back here some, because I can see the tracks of the DVD if I click on the DVD drive icon on the desktop. It automatically mounts if I do that.

Out of curiosity and to have a chance to fix this issue once and for all, what are the required packages a Debian Jessie system needs in order for DVD playback to function with the libdvdcss library? It's possible I have missed something somewhere. As for the previous questions, there is no problem in running DVD movies despite US or European formats since this works on my previous Debian system, worked like a charm!! So I'm picking up my old laptop in the coming days and start making DVD backups from there.

Also, I've been very careful with this system, not installing any non standard system packages (except possibly libdvdcss), so it's pretty clean. If some things are missing, that's the source of this problem.

VLC, mplayer, mpv, etc should be able to play an unencrypted video DVD out of the box in Jessie. The only thing libdvdcss2 does is enable decryption of commercial discs.
