Occasional segfaults in Icedove.

#1 Post by bariumbitmap »

I'm running Icedove on Jessie.

Code: Select all

$ apt-cache policy icedove
icedove:
  Installed: 1:45.6.0-1~deb8u1
  Candidate: 1:45.6.0-1~deb8u1
  Version table:
 *** 1:45.6.0-1~deb8u1 0
        500 http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     1:45.3.0-1~deb8u1 0
        500 http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie/main amd64 Packages
Occasionally, it will segfault. I haven't found a way to reproduce it, so I just run it in safe mode with gdb and get a backtrace.

After a few months, I now have three backtraces from version 45.6.0-1~deb8u1. They are between 4,000 and 5,800 lines long.

Is it worth submitting a bug report if I can't give instructions for reproducing beyond "use it for a few weeks"?

Not if that's all you can say. That is to say, if the "bug" can't be reproduced consistently, then fixing it would be at best prohibitively costly.

That said, maybe see if your information might support/contribute something to existing similar bug reports? (Unlikely, but ya never know.)

The following solution worked for me - you may want to try it:

Thanks a lot! This did the trick. No crashes in almost two weeks.
