Black screen with fresh install with XFCE

#1 Post by sege5641 »

Ok so I decided to try XFCE out and installed Debian 8 in a Xen environment. Went though the standard installer and then selected xfce for my desktop. Restart and now its just a black screen when it finally boots. Ctrl+Alt+F1 works to give me console. Running startx only shows what is listed below.

root@Sky-Steam:/home/user# startx

Try adding 'nomodeset' to the Kernel command line before you boot. Until you get you gfx drivers installed.

Code: Select all

Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.16.0-4-amd64 root=UUID=a21e4e48-b6b8-4969-aa32-ef3ade9fa9ff ro quiet nomodeset

Woke up this morning and left the system on overnight. It was setting at the login screen and seems to be working now. I don't want to reboot yet not without installing some drivers.

So maybe it takes a long time to start up?

did you try the nomodeset option?
that's why it worked.
next, we''ll need the output from this command:

Code: Select all

lspci -k | grep -iEA5 'vga|3d'
