Black screens with dual-monitor-setup (Stretch, KDE, Nvidia)

#1 Post by hth »

Hi.

I have a dual-monitor setup, consisting of one 21:9 screen (primary display, connected via DisplayPort) and one 16:9 screen (connected via HDMI). Those are both connected to an Nvidia GTX 970. I am running a fresh Stretch install with KDE.

Installation (non-graphical) went fine, but after the first reboot I am greeted by two black screens. That is post-Grub, screen goes black when LightDM would normally show up (POST and Grub show on the secondary monitor; this is because the GPU always prioritizes HDMI over DisplayPort and not an issue in itself). When I blindly type in my login data and can be reasonably sure the Plasma session starts, the screen remains black. I can STRG+ALT+F[1-6] into a terminal, and it, like POST/Grub before, will show on the second monitor.

After some fruitless config- and log-checking, I decided to simply disconnect the second monitor and reboot, and everything went as expected. POST and Grub show on my main monitor, LightDM as well, system running fine. I went on to install the proprietary drivers (which I would have anyway) and did some configuring. This includes my second monitor, which was properly identified and worked as intended after I plugged it in again from within the running system.

After a reboot with both screens connected though, same issue: two black screens, still able to change into a terminal. Apart from some additional issues with Nouveau (max. resolution 1024 x 768 on my 21:9 display, refresh rate of 0, fascinatingly), the behaviour is identical with both the free and the proprietary drivers.

The output of xrandr (with both monitors connected) is as follows:

I should probably add that this is using the xorg.conf produced by nvidia-xconfig:

Results are basically the same if I use a minimal config like this though. Hopefully someone here sees something I am not and will be able to point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Black screens with dual-monitor-setup (Stretch, KDE, Nvi

#2 Post by pawRoot »

I have GTX 970 and dual monitors aswell, and all works fine, i have one monitor connected through DVI and one through HDMI.
Which driver did you install? the one from Debian wiki or Nvidia website?

Not sure if it's correct but how i go about installing it when i fresh install Debian is:

Add main contrib non-free repo (/etc/apt/sources.list)

Code: Select all

deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib non-free

Code: Select all

sudo apt update

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Code: Select all

sudo apt update

Code: Select all

sudo apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r|sed 's,[^-]*-[^-]*-,,')

Code: Select all

sudo apt install nvidia-driver
