No Sound at all Problems with pulseaudio

#1 Post by Dithizon »

Hello everybody,

it's my first post here, so I hope I will give you the necessary Information on my problem.

I run Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch) 64-Bit with gnome version 3.22.2 on a Thinkpad T520.

As the topic says, there is all of sudden no Sound on my system. I did not even reboot ore something. First there was only Dummy-Sound, now nothing. I am trying diffrent solutions for hours now, and all I get is error messages.

aplay -L gives me this:

Code: Select all

So I think the soundcard is fine.

Typing pulseaudio -D --system in (root)terminal gives me this:

Code: Select all

W: [pulseaudio] main.c: System-Modus aktiv, jedoch --disallow-module-loading nicht gesetzt!

N: [pulseaudio] main.c: System-Modus aktiv, Exit-Idle-Time gezwungenermaßen deaktiviert!
If i want to remove pulseaudio to install it new, it also fails, and I can not fis it with -f install:

Code: Select all

root@debian:/home/linus# apt-get remove pulseaudio

Recently had similar problem. Installing pavucontrol and finding out it was muted solved my issue.

while i understand german, it would be better if you repeat all those commands with "LANG=C".
example:

Code: Select all

LANG=C aplay -L
etc.

Packages with the 'deb8u' tag are from jessie, but your first post says you are running stretch. Did you put 'stable' in your sources.list, maybe for security updates or something?

it would seem you have more pressing problems than no sound!

Code: Select all

are you always root???

Thank you for your answers!

My sources list looks like this:

Code: Select all

#

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.2.0 _Jessie_ - Official amd64 CD Binary-1 20150906-11:13]/ jessie main

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.2.0 _Jessie_ - Official amd64 CD Binary-1 20150906-11:13]/ jessie main

deb http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian/ jessie main
deb-src http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian/ jessie main

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main

# jessie-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main
deb-src http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main

deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian wheezy main contrib
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free

deb http://ftp.dk.debian.org/debian sid main
All the entries are for jessie, none for stretch. Is it right that stretch is still in the testing phase, and jessie is the latest stable distribution?

@debiman: It was a mistake to run the aplay -L command as root, I probably was still root to run the apt-get install command. I try to use root only when it is necessary. I still try to learn about linux and i see that there is a lot not alright with my system out of this error message, but do not understand what exactly. I searched for these packages, and they seem quite important. Any ideas how to fix this?

Is it possible that I updated accidentally to stretch and these packages are still under development? Is there a possibility to downgrade to jessie again?

Hmmm, oldstable, stable and unstable - good luck with that.

edit: You probably want to get rid of that system and install a fresh stable.

hmmm, what about wheezy and sid?
did this really happen unknowingly & by accidents, or rather by some sort of "nobody's going to curb my freedom!" attitude?
i don't really need an answer for this.
just reinstall, and be more careful in the future.

I do not quite understand what you wanna tell me, but this happened by accident, as I said, i am still learning. The problem is that my kind of learning is mainly trial and error, in the future I first read more before messing with my software

As soon as possible I will install debian jessie again. Thank you for the quick answers! Does debian automatically upgrade to the latest testing version if I run apt-get update & upgrade? I do not remember updating intentionally to stretch, only running the update/upgrade commands from time to time. (Maybe a stupid question, but i want to prevent that mistake in the future  ).

Read this: https://www.debian.org/releases/

And yet in your initial post, you explicitly say that you're running Stretch (ironically enough, the only thing you're not running).

No. This is something you did yourself.

Click the "avoid a broken install" link in my sig. Read it. Heed it.

If that doesn't scare you, try this post: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?&t=114130

https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian

Adding sources to your sources.lists , like Debian Wheezy, when you are
running Debian Jessie, or adding Debian testing, or sid , does not happen automatically,..it takes a deliberate , intentional action using root privileges
to edit the sources.list file.

In some cases, especially if one tries to install packages from outside the Debian
repos, it will try to modify the sources.list file and add the needed sources, but
even then it is not "automatic", it normally tells you it will be doing that, and asks, then the admin must select yes or no, to actually allow it.
kind of learning is mainly trial and error,
Some times it is necessary to try something, and see if it works, if not then try
something else, "trial and error",...but just blindly trying things, and not keeping any record of what exactly was "tried" or done, and then you don't even remember what you did or did not do is just plain silly,....What if what you did worked ?, but you do not record it, later when you need to do the same thing,
you still have not learned anything, and have no notes, or record of what you did.
Like wise, not recording what did not work, just leads to repeatedly making the same mistake, over and over.
Yes, this is a problem:
problem is that my kind of learning
That is not a way of learning, one does not learn anything, if they do not remember or keep a record of what they did.
And then when they come to ask for help, they can not even really tell the helpers exactly what they did or didn't do.

I looked in options -> Details and then it says Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch) 64-Bit, thats why I assumed that is right.

I understand, my behavior was silly, at least I will be more careful from now.

Quick summary for the future:
-If I run eg. jessie, only add sources to sources.list for jessie
-stay with the stable release
-if it does not work, ceep calm and note, what i have done (same if it works)
- (edit) remember the dontBreakeDebian Link :!:

No problem, we all are learning and make mistakes,...that is part of the process.
Sorry, this was meant for debiman as answer to this:

debiman wrote:
[...] by some sort of "nobody's going to curb my freedom!" attitude?
I think , but only debiman can say for sure, but there are some users that insist
on doing what they want, and they are free to do that, but they are confused and
when people have told them they can not, or should not do something this way or that way, simply because it won't work,..they get offended and say we are "infringing" or curbing their "freedom", so they don't pay any attention to anything
anyone else suggests.
You are free to make a "frankendebian" if you want, but it usually does not work out very well, contrary to what 1 or 2 confused or misguided people may claim.
Most people, after they do learn about the consequences of mixing various versions, and distros, do not try to do that intentionally.
A additional note,...if it was not you that modified the sources.list file, then your system was compromised, that means something or someone is doing things as root, with out you knowing it,.... Re-installing , use new passwords, and good ones, etc,... and then being more careful in the future should fix that.
After installing a fresh, clean system if there still are problems with pulse audio,
that can be addressed and worked on,...in a more sane way.

Hope that makes sense.

thanks garry, yeah that's about what i meant.

Dithizon, what i write now is not about you personally, it's about something I'm seeing fairly often, so please don't feel that I'm over-reacting.

==========

for me it is really hard to understand how something like this can happen "by accident", because i KNOW that the user MUST have willingly (if not knowingly) entered a command that would mess up their repo lists like that.

i guess they followed some step-by-step guide to "install best verison of software XYZ" or some such, and simply copy pasted the commands, provided their password when prompted, without at all knowing what those commands actually do.
for me, this type of behavior is a case of "intentional carelessness" resulting in "accidents".
if that's a valid definition of "accidentally", i really don't know....

Hello everyone,

i followed your advice and reinstalled debian, now everything works well! Thank you a lot. I started to write down everything I do if its about the system or stuff I've never done before. After the first lessons at the beginner course for Bioinformatics at my university I'm looking forward to a better understanding of what I do while working with my computer.

this is very important; the writing down part doesn't have to be on paper, but it pays to remember what one did so one can undo it if necessary.

but even more than that, it pays to pay more attention WHILE doing things; all these messages in the terminal are written by humans for humans, so read them!
