LightDM refuses to start on dual graphics Pavilion (SOLVED)

#1 Post by OldBob »

The problem is occurring on an HP Pavilion G7, 1174ca.

When I turn on the laptop, the Xorg process simply runs but I get dropped to a console prompt. The process cannot be killed and I must hard power off the machine. What makes this irritating is it only happens sometimes. It seems like if I let it sit for a few minutes, it's more likely to work, but not always, so that may just be coincidence.

When it doesn't work, my xorg.0.log looks like this:

There is nothing in dmesg that's different between the two situations. I did not do an upgrade just before this started happening nor did I change any settings, though I have done upgrades since then. I'm running stretch, just updated today.

I should also point out that this only started a few weeks ago. Before that, everything ran fine.

Please let me know what further information you need and any advice you might have.
Thank you.

Re: LightDM refuses to start on dual graphics Pavilion g7

It's okay, the Xorg.0.log is interesting because one device is using modesetting and one is using radeon driver. I have seen this problem myself on intel hardware running jessie, and added my user, and my desktop manager kdm to the 'video' group. This 'seems' to have helped with the random problem, but I can't swear by it. In my case it seemed to happen more often on a cold boot, not warm. The reason I think this helped is because the nodes created in /dev/dri are owned by user root and group video.

You might get somewhere with this, or it may be a waste of time. I don't think it will cause any harm though.

More people might recognize an issue if you post more infor about your graphics hardware. try something like this

Code: Select all

$ lspci -k | grep -A3 VGA
or install the package 'inxi' and you can gather a lot more to post in the thread here.

Good Luck.

p.s. oh yeah, have you tried restarting lightdm from terminal as root when you get the problem? I have used
# service kdm restart
successfully. There may be a file in /etc/init.d called lightdm or something similar?

I'm not trying to imply a bug with systemd, and I don't know the status of sysV init on stretch, but I would think it a good idea to explore this. systemd is very complex, and while it has worked well for me on jessie, I have occasionally used sysV init to eliminate it as a possible cause of boot/shutdown/login issues.

You can test this by installing package sysvinit-core AFTER doing proper research on what this will do to your system.

Thanks bw123. I added video to lightdm's group list, and it worked after a single soft reboot, which is a good sign. I hope it continues to work.

Here's the output of inxi -G:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card-1: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Seymour [Radeon HD 6400M/7400M Series]
           Display Server: X.Org 1.19.2 drivers: modesetting,ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)
           Resolution: 1600x900@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Sandybridge Mobile
           GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 13.0.6
Here's xrandr --listproviders:

Code: Select all

Providers: number : 2
Provider 0: id: 0x7a cap: 0xf, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 2 outputs: 4 associated providers: 0 name:modesetting
Provider 1: id: 0x54 cap: 0xf, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 4 outputs: 1 associated providers: 0 name:CAICOS @ pci:0000:01:00.0
I'll reboot a few times over the next few days. Hopefully I'll be able to say it works. :) Thanks bw!

Well, it's been a few days and it seems to be working consistently well! Thanks again.

If you get a few minutes, could you tell me how you came up with the idea to try changing the permissions? It was an intermittent problem, so why would permissions solve it? I'm still kind of stumped about that.

Of course, I have a new problem which popped up soon after this problem but I wanted to get it sorted before I went after this one: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=132743

Thank you!
