Thank you also for mentioning that 64-bit would work on my netbook. It's an old HP Mini 210 with 2 GB RAM (upgraded, that's the maximum allowed) and an Intel Atom Processor N455 (I think [?]), purchased in 2011. Not a powerhouse by any means, but it's fine for word processing and Web browsing -- plus I like its portability.

It's nice to know that 64-bit is a possibility if I need it. Since I'm lazy, I will try enry13's suggestion on my current 32-bit installation first. Thanks again for your help, harritapio. :)

A kernel update on June 27 had fixes for a Java problem that affected LibreOffice. Maybe that was the problem and it would resolve by running updates.

If I have the updated kernel it did not fix my box.

jim@debian:~$ uname -a
Linux debian 4.9.0-3-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 4.9.30-2+deb9u2 (2017-06-26) i686 GNU/Linux
jim@debian:~$

For the stable distribution (stretch), this problem has been fixed in
version 4.9.30-2+deb9u2.

I installed Stretch just a few days ago and made all updates. I still had the same issue. 64 bit is no sensible option on my hardware. But removing "libreoffice-wiki-publisher" and "libreoffice-nlpsolver" did the trick for me instantly too. Thanks for sharing the information!

problem and it is (strange!) related to the kernel version and java libreoffice extensions:

Anyway i have not downgraded the kernel as they suggest but just removed
two java libreoffice-writer extensions that apparently cause the problem and that i
have never used or seen before (they are installed by default as example of extensions):

apt-get remove --purge libreoffice-wiki-publisher
apt-get remove --purge libreoffice-nlpsolver

After this libreoffice-writer is now running fine and for
me the problem is solved

Thank You for this! Did the trick for me!

Thank you very much, but only need this one line:
Code: Select all
apt-get remove --purge libreoffice-wiki-publisher

Not need the second line for me:
Code: Select all
apt-get remove --purge libreoffice-nlpsolver

My problem is solved.

I had same problem.
I removed the following packages.

Code: Select all
apt-get remove libreoffice-gtk2
apt-get remove libreoffice-gtk2

libreoffice writer is now launching.

Special Note:

Instead of removing this package, try disabling Java Runtime Environment.

Steps to disable Java in libreoffice.

1. Launch libreoffice
2. Tools -> Options -> Advanced
3. Uncheck "Use a Java runtime environment"

I got lowriter (libreoffice-writer) to launch.

Can u explain how you concluded that libreoffice-gtk2 needs to be removed?
