[solved]Font config issues after upgrade

Postby macrobb » 2017-07-14 14:41

Hello,

I'm currently running a Debian Unstable(sid) system, and after a recent upgrade, my fonts aren't rendering properly.
I'm using the Microsoft Core Fonts(Arial, Courier New etc) and the "Sharp'n'clear" font config file from here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Fonts#Manual_Font_Smoothing
I've been using this for years without issue - Small Arial etc. ends up rendering in the sharp and hinted "Windows XP" style, and larger sizes end up anti-aliased nicely.

Right now, though, the fonts are very rough - see this: http://imgur.com/a/voI4q
Anything antialiased looks fine(large fonts, bold fonts)

Other stuff of note:
I'm using KDE for my desktop environment, but I am getting the same rendering in Firefox, Geany etc.

I thought about perhaps downgrading some packages to see what fixes it, but I'm not exactly sure what I should try.

Any thoughts?

Here's the exact font config file I'm using, which works fine on my other Debian Testing machine that hasn't been updated recently:
Code: Select all

     Why was this conceived?

     - some font families look better hinted by Byte Code Interpreter (BCI)
while other fonts look better hinted by Auto-Hinter
     - hinting type affects italic and bold fonts differently
     - antialiasing needs to be adjusted according to font families and sizes

Essentially, there is no one single rule that works for all fonts.

     NOTE:
     - Verdana @ 8pt doesn't render '2' and '6' right
     - Arial shows 'Z' distorted in Firefox 1.5

"The relationship of pixels to points depends on the number of pixels
per inch, which is typically some 'standard' value corresponding to
default screen fonts. For example, MS Windows has two standard sets of
screen fonts initially designed for IBM display systems: 'small' (VGA)
and 'large' (8514/A). 'Small' fonts are 96 pixels per inch, 'large' are
     120. Macintosh systems render type at a nominal 72 pixels per inch, i.e.

Edit:
I solved this myself by:
1. Adding 'stable' repos.
2. Installing the 'freetype6' package, version 2.6:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install libfreetype6=2.6.3-3.2 libfreetype6:i386=2.6.3-3.2

Suddenly, everything works right again!
