Debian Stretch problem with ATI-driver and third monitor

Postby Hendrik » 2017-08-26 10:57

Hi,
I've recently installed Stretch and since then my third monitor is not working anymore. Due to the new XOrg version I had to switch from the proprietary ATI driver to the open source driver at the same time and I think this is causing the problems.

Here are a few general informations to start with:

$ xrandr --listproviders
Providers: number : 2
Provider 0: id: 0x8e cap: 0xf, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 4 outputs: 4 associated providers: 0 name:ATI FirePro (FireGL) Graphics Adapter @ pci:0000:02:00.0
Provider 1: id: 0x46 cap: 0xf, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 3 outputs: 4 associated providers: 0 name:modesetting

$ lspci -nn | grep VGA

[ 66.809] (II) RADEON(0): Output DisplayPort-3 connected

Don't be mislead by the fact that the last two commands only detect two monitors, since the third monitor (same model as the other two) was switched of when the commands were run.

When I switch on the third monitor on boot, the X-system starts up but is completely unresponsive with the first two screens with the normal login screen and the third one black, the mouse is not even indicated and I can't login. However, it is possible to switch to a non-graphical login. Without the third monitor everything works well.

The system is completely updated and I have no xorg.conf in place.

I hope this information is sufficient for the start, if anyone needs additional to answer the question, I will gladly provide it since I have put a lot of time in this issue without any success so far.

Thanks a lot for any help,
Hendrik
