Recent Intel hardware often requires non-free firmware, even to get sound to work. Install inxi and give us the result of "inxi -F", or cut right to the chase and install "firmware-misc-nonfree" to see if that fixes the issue (after a reboot).

Ok, I had little time when I posted the last reply. Pulse Audio Volume Control (pavucontrol) is a graphical program to adjust volumes and set sound card options. I'm guessing that it is defaulting to send audio through the HDMI output but you want to send it through the inbuilt card. You can change it there.

Why do 95% of the people I ask to use inxi run it as root when I never have that in the instructions? You're not running as the root user, are you?

Anyway, you have 3rd generation Intel hardware, and as far as I know, that doesn't need firmware. And the sound drivers in the 4.9 kernel should have been supporting that hardware for quite a while, too.

In answer to your question, possibly because people are unskilled with linux and are completely unaware that it makes any difference. Like me.

I think a lot of people just assume things, in this case they assume it should be run as root, and that is not a good practice, but it is rather normal.
Personally, unless it specificity says "as root", or "sudo this-command",

, unless it says use root, I try as a normal user first, then if it says "permission denied", I try again as root.

if you play music from a music player, what does it show in the Playback tab of Pulse Audio Volume Control? You can set which device plays audio for each program. In the Configuration tab, can you set HDMI device profile to Off?
Your inxi output shows Nvidia HDMI audio as card 1 so your system may be treating it as default and trying to play through that.
