Custom .desktop shortcuts in gnome

#1 Post by fmp »

Since Waterfox isn't in the debian repos I installed via compressed archive.

To create a shortcut, I ran:

Code: Select all

gnome-desktop-item-edit ~/.local/share/applications --create-new
and clicked on the icon and chose the .svg icon I placed in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/apps/scalable/

Yet the icon I selected doesn't show when I search gnome applications for Waterfox. Am I missing something?
Restarted Gnome via alt cntrl fn -> r also; no luck.

This Ask Ubuntu post describes how to install firefox developer edition from a tar.gz, but the process is the same for Waterfox. It also shows how to make a .desktop file that will show up in menus, docks, etc.

Look at "Manually" in the first answer.
