Linux GUI in VMware without 3D

#1 Post by dmnk_68 »

Can anyone tell me whether the Linux GUI in VMware can work without 3D?
Where can I edit the configs to switch it to 2D?

I have a virtual machine in which I basically can not add 3D to the properties of the video adapter. This is restrictions of the owners.
I tried setting up Linux GUI for Debian 9 there (for test purposes), but no way.
I specially setup the most undemanding to resources window managers Xfce and LXDE. They have no 3D requirements in system requirements (or forgotten to specify).

The open-vm-tools-desktop package with video driver for VMware is installed and running.
In the VMware console the 2D graphics are presented (works for the installer and grub).
During the download I see the transition to the graphical display mode (for text). But as soon as full GUI starts instead of text the screen becomes black, only the cursor pointer is visible.

In errors (/var/log/Xorg.1.log, etc.) are presented:

Re: Linux GUI in VMware without 3D

What you are calling the "Linux GUI" is no doubt Debian's default GNOME 3, which does require 3D. Can you use the fallback "gnome-classic" instead?

There are many other desktops available that do not require 3D acceleration--just about all the others, in fact.

Hello. If you want 3d in VMware, you can check this.

Thank you!
My problem was - I couldn't even use 2D graphics in VMware console.
I didn't expect 3D, but the fact that 2D does not work - strange.
Recommendations here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/537787/ ... untu-14-04
not working because I don't have any referenced configuration files and folders.

I spent a lot of time to experiment with this problem.
It turned out that the problem strangely occurs only in VM console of VMware and only due to installing "open-vm-tools-desktop" or some (not all) drivers VMware. Installing only "open-vm-tools" does not cause such bug!
I also found that this issue occurs at default installation of Xubuntu, but at Lubuntu default installation the graphical user interface in the VMware console works as long as it is not installed "open-vm-tools-desktop".

But despite the black screen in VMware console, the GUI in remote connecting to another session works fine!
So it's a very strange bug.
