Good mtp option for Stretch + Samsung?

#1 Post by caulfield »

Hi,

I have issues when trying to transfer files (mp3) from Stretch KDE to Samsung Galaxy A5. I correctly set the Samsung as a storage device, but then whenever I try to access it via Dolphin, Samsung asks me if I want to allow Debian to access its files. I then enter this loop where I can't access it, but the phone always asks if I allow Debian to access it, and over and over again. And then, when I get an option to copy files, I can't, the 'paste' option is greyed out, ctrl+v also doesn't work. Is there any other good way to mtp on Debian? And an option that would allow me to transfer folders, not just files.

edit: forgot the error:

Code: Select all

No Storages found. Maybe you need to unlock your device?
Thanks.

Running fully updated Stretch with stock KDE.

If you have a samba share, you can install Total Commander on your Android device and use that to copy files using wifi. :)
Debian 12 / Xfce4

Or Ghost Commander with the sftp plugin.

MTP is bollocks - I'm pretty sure google's reason for embracing MS's crap invention is that it is so flakey it pushes the masses to instead sync via their "easy cloud services", clipping your ticket on the way through.

I connect my Samsung phone as a media device. From Dolphin I can see all the files on the phone and can perform any action on them. On Jessie, but that shouldn't make any difference.

I gave up on MTP last year. This is the best explanation for it I have seen so far.

this is my favorite solution - adb always works!

Try KDE Connect, easiest way I have found to connect and transfer. It also has some other cool functions like using phone for media control, as an input device, or send/receive SMS from your PC.

Just came in to say this. Don't know how I managed to miss KDE Connect, it works great! Thanks sunrat!

Not sure what exactly did it, Debian or Samsung upgrades, but since today (at least) mtp works normally on Samsung A5 2017.

Just to update if someone had the same problem.

Thanks.
