Windows look strange (Jessie vs Stretch)

Postby mrspuck » 2017-11-20 09:35

Hi,

Sorry if this is a dumb question but ...
Some windows in my Stretch installation look strange/old fashioned. See links below for comparison with the look under Jessie. I guess I just need to install some GTK+younameit, Which library/package could be responsible for it?

Jessie: https://ibb.co/ehxwNm
Stretch: https://ibb.co/hUxKa6

Thanks
Mr

It is a purely subjective feeling. This is related more to the DE theme, than it's a Stretch vs Jessie thing. We call this here "a non-issue".

What's the "DE theme"?

The look and feel theme of your Desktop Environment (GNOME, KDE, XFCE, etc.)

I am actually astounded that you managed to install Debian but you don't know what a desktop environment is.

Please take a look for yourself:

Luckily there was no acronym test before running the installer...

The DE is Gnome 3 and the Theme is Vertex. But it does not matter. When I switch to the default theme (Adwaita), only the window decoration (outer window border) changes, not the widgets inside, menu bar, menu, fonts.

@Wheelerof4te: When you say "We call this here "a non-issue": - does this mean the topic has been discussed (where?) and there is no known solution?

Try to install
Code: Select all
qt5-gtk-platformtheme
package.

And yes, it's an issue. I can't imagine anybody could accept that: https://ibb.co/hUxKa6

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install qt5-gtk-platformtheme
...
qt5-gtk-platformtheme is already the newest version (5.7.1+dfsg-3+b1).

BTW the L&F is even different in my VM and the real/desktop box although I tried to follow the same steps when installing them. Both are close though, and uglier than Jessie (running Gnome3/Vertex too). Strange.

I should also mention that font rendering is generally OK in my Stretch installations, i.e. most applications looks pretty much as the screenshot for Jessy I linked. Only a few applications have that weird look; in particular: VLC and the VirtualBox GUI (downloaded from virtualbox.org as Debian 9 .deb package).

Try to install libgnomeui-0 package. If this does not help, try to run any qt application from command line and see if there are no any warnings related to theme (QGtkStyle). P.S. you need to restart X to see any changes.

Installed libgnomeui-0 and rebooted for safety but no change.
Ran virtualbox (which says it uses QT 5.7.1) from the cmd line but no printouts.
And, yes, that look is an issue for me: https://ibb.co/jTnkXm

Run any qt app in terminal and capture console output, try vlc or some other. I suspect some gtk or gnome libs are still missing. Obviously it looks an issue, from some reason, qt engine is unable to determine your gtk style, so fallback (ugly) is used instead. Theme and font should be the same as you set for GTK apps.

It may be hard to determine what is missing. I have recently installed Debian Testing from scratch (I have chosen Cinnamon as desktop environment during installation) and I don't have this issue, qt look is fine.

Ah, may be worth looking at for reference nevertheless.

Actually I was missing the font config, so now the comparison looks like this:

Stretch: https://ibb.co/hA8O2m
Jessie: https://ibb.co/ehxwNm

Jessie still looking better/more modern, or is that the intended/expected look for Stretch?
