Re: In a hp pavilion with Stretch, display rotates spontaneo
full hardware specs please, exact model etc.
does this have screen rotating sensors?
and a better problem description would be good.

Re: In a hp pavilion with Stretch, display rotates spontaneo
Hi:
Complete specifications are: HP Pavilion model 15-p001la.
No touchscreen, no screen rotating sensors.
AMD Quad-Core A10-5745M, AMD Radeon R7 M260
Description of the problem: Some minutes after login without any action of the user, display begins rotating with a rotation each ~5 minutes. The display remains ~5 minutes with rotation 90° and then ~5 minutes with rotation -90°, and so for.
I will provide more information as demanded.
Thanks.

Do you have firmware-amd-graphics installed?
Re: In a hp pavilion with Stretch, display rotates spontaneo
Dear Wheelerof4te:
Yes, have installed firmware-amd-graphics.
What to do?
Thanks

Dear Wheelerof4te:
I have installed kernel 4.13.0-0.bpo.1-amd64 but unfortunately the problem remains the same.
Do you have another suggestion?
Thanks

Does the same problem occur when you select GNOME on Wayland from GDM on login? Plus what debiman said.
Re: In a hp pavilion with Stretch, display rotates spontaneo
Hi:
Yes the problem is the same in GNOME on Wayland.
In a first view, I don't find anything useful in Xorg log, dmesg, journalctl and lspci, but probably is because I don't know what look for.
In the mean time I have discovered a surprising behaviour: When display rotates, I can restore the right display by rotating all the laptop some 45° and coming back!
That means that the laptop has an acceleration sensor? I said before that there was not a rotation sensor. For what is it a rotation sensor in a laptop?
Anyway, looks that the laptop has a rotation sensor and now I know that I can recover the verticality each time the display rotates by rotating the laptop.
I have to do that each 5 minutes or so. Still a problem.
Anybody knows how to solve this problem?
Thanks.

In dconf editor, navigate to
Check if it is set to on.
Code: Select all
/org/gnome/settings-daemon/peripherals/touchscreen/
Re: In a hp pavilion with Stretch, display rotates spontaneo
hi 4D696B65:
The result of the search is: orientation-lock false
I tried to change to true, but I could not. The reply mesagge is: failed to commit changes to dconf
Do you have some instruction?
Thanks.

Re: In a hp pavilion with Stretch, display rotates spontaneo
I don't have a touch screen, but suspect the touchpad may be involved.
Do you, or have you, disabled the touchpad?
If not the touchpad, something in the touch screen settings should solve this.
https://wiki.debian.org/TabletAndTouchScreen
suggests that not everything may work.
Xorg logs, as others have said may give more clues.

Re: In a hp pavilion with Stretch, display rotates spontaneo
Hi 4D696B65:
I could not change orientation-lock to true because I tried to do it as root, but as normal user I have succeded doing it and now the display is no more rotating. Great!
I would like to do the same as root because the initial login display also rotates. I assume that doing the same as root the login display will be fixed. dconf-editor does not allow me make changes as root. Is there another way to do that?
Would be very good to have everything fixed.
Thanks.

Glad to hear it worked.amorales wrote:Hi 4D696B65:

I don't think that would solve the greeter problem. We will need to look deeper into this.amorales wrote:I would like to do the same as root because the initial login display also rotates. I assume that doing the same as root the login display will be fixed.
As I said, I dont think you should do that.amorales wrote: dconf-editor does not allow me make changes as root. Is there another way to do that?
You're welcome.amorales wrote:Thanks.

ask people for facts, you still get opinions, only they thought it was fact.
Re: [Solved]hp pavilion, Stretch, display rotates spontaneo
Hi:
I have marked the problem as Solved, but I must say that still the login display is some times rotated. This can cause to the Linux beginners think that this operative system is primitive, which it is not true. I must remind that looks that the problem is specific to hp pavilion, therefore hp pavilion must take some action.
Thanks.

Re: [Solved]hp pavilion, Stretch, display rotates spontaneo
thoughts:
the screen rotation is triggered by some sensor, which is basically a device of your computer, and probably has a driver/module.
maybe you can
- disable the module. no more screen rotation.
or
- see if something can be done about the driver: driver options, newer driver, newer firmware...
