3d accelleration / glxgears question on debian wheezy
3d accelleration / glxgears question on debian wheezy
hello ,
i have installed a fresh copy of debian wheezy on a fujitsu siemens h270 with nvidia quadro fx 770m,
upon installing i run
glxinfo | grep direct
(result was > yes)
followed by
glxgears
(result was > around 500 fps)
i thought maybe there is room for improvement so installed the native nvidia drivers 304.x legacy for debian wheezy
and glxgears went down to around 50 fps
have i installed the wrong driver and is it too old?
only now i see that quadro 770m is in 340.x in sid?
thank you very much

Re: 3d accelleration / glxgears question on debian wheezy
well , i upgraded to
driver 340.x from wheezy backports as shown in the debian wiki, and the framerate is still only at round 50 fps;
is there something wrong with the propietary driver of nvidia for debian , did i do something wrong, or lies the problem simply with the tool glxgears?

yes, soem further testing is needed,
but indeed, the nvidia-driver seems a bit more sluggish, but i can also be wrong on this.

Did you pull the kernel from backports, too? I think you can't build that driver on Linux 3.2, or it would be unreliable.
Re: 3d accelleration / glxgears question on debian wheezy
Didn't it mention the thing about "framerate matches refresh" or somthing similar? It is really used just to confirm that the setup is working.mrkapqa wrote:well , i upgraded to

There is a GLX_SOMETHING=X glxgears that shows the true rate way to run it but I forgot, try man page. Might be VSYNC=0 so try a websearch.
p.s. 500 aint bad on an older/slower machine

sorry guys, i am just your average linux user,
but i did notice that with fresh installation it would just say
Direct rendering=Yes
and after installing Nvidia Driver
Direct rendering=YES
EGL...... somehting
i also tried to uninstall the "driver" but was not succesful.
Debian Wiki states
Backing out in case of failure
In case you want to restore your system to the state it was before, do:
If you can't use your desktop environment:
hit Ctrl+alt+F2
login as root
# apt-get purge nvidia. (don't forget the "." dot) It erases every package with "nvidia" on its name
# /etc/init.d/gdm3 stop (gdm3 for gnome 3)
# apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg
# apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
# killall Xorg
# reboot
Xorg should reconfigure itself, if not run a terminal and pass
# X -configure
i did that, but aftwards,
in my case i was no more able to get to desktop with "startx" ,
so i installed debian anew,
and it is indeed alot quicker as with nvidia driver. i am a bit confused, though, on this issue.

And I'm wondering about you using Wheezy, which will reach end-of-life in four months. The open video drivers generally work better in newer releases, too.mrkapqa wrote:still wondering though, about those drivers.bw123 wrote:Don't make it difficult trying to find the fastest/best/latest drivers. Technically, it has already reached EOL. Debian LTS support is lacking, there is no dedicated security team or anything similar.

Yes, Yes, but no need to argue. I like winning teams, and so far the Wheezy has served best on the Dual Core 2 Duo laptops i use here.
Also i noticed quite some hiccups here and there with the newer versions, but i have to agree that with Debian Stretch are really good work has been done, if i may say this from "afar behind" the Wheezy desk.
No need to worry, too, as i don't seem what security concerns i should have? I am using quite some latest firefox and thunderbird, thats good, or isnt it?
Always ready to learn new things , though , withouth breaking the good, thats sort my linux approach, i learn to behave.
Re: 3d accelleration / glxgears question on debian wheezy
You won't have long to wonder, Wheezy reaches End of Life May 31, after which there will be no further support and you should not use an unsupported release.mrkapqa wrote:still wondering though, about those drivers.
[edit] I'm going to suggest a modern Debian derivative to you that should run reasonably on on that old hardware, MX Linux, they also have a excellent forum.

I'm using Sid on my Core2Duo system. Works nicely.
