[SOLVED]Chromium is out-of-date

#1 Post by Wheelerof4te »

Chromium is currently two versions behind Google Chrome, and CVEs are pilling up:
https://security-tracker.debian.org/tra ... um-browser

It would be wise to upgrade it to the latest version on Stable, Sid is updated already. Are there any problems for doing so?

Keep in mind that the Chromium you see on Chromium site is latest "release" version not the stable version which is only available from source, also as far I know the security is applied as patches. So Debian's version should be relatively ok, similar to Firefox-ESR.

firefox-esr is always kept up-to-date, use that instead.

EDIT: with this package as well:

Firefox-ESR is toot slow, that's why I'm using Chromium.

You could always download the latest and run it from your /home/[user] ....

You should (c) that, or (copy left it or whatever).

It took a bit of trial and error to create desktop entry (reason why I hesitated), but I got it working. Simple instructions from Debian wiki.

wheeler, just remember unless there is a "check for update" thingy under help or something then you have to be alert for those updates yourself. I used to do this years ago with IceCat.

PS: You could also do this with the new Firefox Quantum, it appears faster then Chrome/Chromium and not as much Google spying stuff.

^Ah, thx for noting that. It apears everything is fine, once I click on "about Firefox" it looks like it is auto-checking for version then says "Firefox is up to date". I just extracted it to my /home and made the desktop entry.

Yes, it's the latest Quantum stable version, 59.0.2.

Not as good as it looks. Quantum crashes twice. Also, it is memory hog. Uses much more memory than Firefox esr. I have never had such problems with Firefox-esr.

There's nothing wrong with Firefox-esr. However you might try Waterfox or Pale Moon. They both can be set to run in user space.

If you are having trouble with Quantum I'm wondering if something else is going on. Try turning off all your extensions.

I would recommend you also give Slimjet a try. If you have 64-bit, the Qupzilla browser AppImage is also quite light and very fast. I don't know if they have a universal package version of its successor, Falkon, ready yet.

Thanks for the tip. I'm trying it now as I type this, as always, in user space. So far it looks good. It has a bunch of ad links which I'll have to purge.

Slimjet is fast and easy to look at but . . . when I tried about:config it changed to slimjet:config and told me that their site was down. Is this Texas based browser running a scam?

Hmmm...I just updated to their latest version today, too. There have been users on the MX forums for quite a while now, and we've all been fairly happy with it, though you do need to read their FAQ on how to install restricted ffmpeg codecs for stuff like h.264 HTML5 playback, since they aren't going to pay MPEG-LA's extortionate licensing fees. It's not a scam as far as I can tell. Some other distros, such as PCLinuxOS, bundle it into their repos, too. I would say the error you get is more of a bug or oversight.

The slimjet:config message is
This site can’t be reached
The web page at chrome://config/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
ERR_INVALID_URL
Slimjet must be a modified Chrome.

Edited to add: 7 Chromium Based Browsers With Extra Features Yes, Slimjet is a modified Chrome.

Yes, and it's nice they also continue to offer a 32-bit version, unlike the Google.

I blanked the advertising New Tab, enlarged the font so I can now read this forum and made a few other adjustments. It looks like a good option for those who want to run Chrome in user space.

ummm, did you read the comments on their page under download:
https://www.slimjet.com/en/dlpage.php

repeated problems with malware from their own download page/link, that doesn't speak too highly for the project.

Iridium is chromium with all the google stuff ripped out.. The developers have provided a Debian build
https://iridiumbrowser.de/downloads/debian

The Iridium developers have lost some enthusiasm, ?donations lagging?, and the Debian version is several months old

A fast browser that works great on forums is netsurf. It has rudimentary Javascript ie it will not do online banking. There is a fairly recent build in Stretch.https://packages.debian.org/stretch/netsurf
