Devaun is more like the original Debian then the current Debian, with the unclear origin of it's systemd, and the qualtity is a thing of the past.
As far as the MX distros go, there is a huge difference between them, and what they call "frakendebian". Seems like there are a lot of clowns on this forum, it is entertaining.

Geting GIMP 2.10 on Stretch? I thought we already figured it out, no? Use a flatpak/snap or backport a bunch of libs from some repo that may or may not break your system.
Anything else?

Yes, those are the choices. I would say that the odds of my backports breaking your system are very low to none, base on the reports from those that have done the upgrades.
