I just installed Testing+XFCE on a Dell Inspiron 5667. I installed version 4.13 of xfwm following the instructions here to solve video tearing.
While on my user XFCE session, whenever I start rsync to recover my data from a backup USB hard drive the screen goes black and I get the lightdm greeter; it's exactly the issue discussed here, save the fact that I am not on a VM. The last time I got this error/bug rsync had been running for about 1 minute; sometimes it gets longer, more than 10 minutes, before I get kicked out of the XFCE session.
Here's what lightdm.log says:

I have been trying to rsync my USB HDD with my local HDD all day now; I finally got to the point where I copied and pasted in Thunar (there were just a few directories left), and that went on almost smoothly (the system went slow sometimes, but the files were copied and the session wasn't terminated).
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I also just installed Testing+XFCE with Openbox instead of xfwm4 on another laptop (Dell Inspiron 1090, a very small box) and there rsync works fine and runs for hours (quite literally) uninterrupted.
EDIT 2: Also happened when running Rhythmbox and it was reading the music database.
I need to know how to diagnose and solve this, I use rsync to backup everything in my laptop to the USB HDD.
Thanks in advance! Cheers!
