Flash videos with DRM

#1 Post by Golf »

A few years back Adobe stopped releasing new versions of the flash plugin for Linux (only providing security updates). A plugin (pepper) was provided for Chrome but this did not support DRM on Linux. Adobe then decided to start providing updated versions of the flash plugin for Linux but these also lacked DRM support. I am not a fan of DRM at all but some UK TV channels use it either in their live streams or on demand content. For a while I used the Windows version of Firefox with wine to watch them and this worked very well until the last few versions of firefox which crash immediately when I try to run them:
Unhandled exception: page fault on execute access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x00000000).

Using an older version of Firefox doesn't work either since although it will start without crashing, flash just hangs and never plays anything so right now I'm having to resort to booting into Windows if I need to watch anything on Channel 5 which is far far ideal, is there any way around this?

this shouldn't be necessary.
you can try to
  • download the latest flashplugin for your architecture & OS from adobe, and just drop the *.so in the appropriate folder
  • use a newer firefox version for linux without installing it (unzip and run)
  • both

The Linux version of Flash provided by Adobe doesn't support DRM so while I can get some videos to play natively in Linux, it won't work if they use DRM.

I can say that as my local TV station could only be streamed in Chrome. They have since dropped using Flash and it works in Firefox again now.

The last situation that I know of is that no publicly available, current version of Flash for Linux supports DRM. I have heard that the version distributed with Chromebooks does, and some hackers have managed to extract and run that on Linux...so, the game is afoot.
