Audio busted all of a sudden

#1 Post by Serenity »

Very recently (i.e. in the last 24 hours) I've lost all audio on my Debian testing/sid system. Typically audio comes through the Realtek ALC892 built in to my motherboard (listed as Built-in Audio Analog Stereo in my KDE System Settings) but now it's greyed-out and all I've got is dummy output. I don't even know if it actually is broken, though that seems unlikely as everything else on my motherboard is working fine. The only thing listed as a possible output is the 'GP106 High Definition Audio Controller' which, after a bit of googling, turns out to be my Nvidia graphics card. I've no idea if that would even work, though given that it will only output over HDMI and my speakers use standard line output, that seems academic right now.

I first noticed something was wrong when I installed the latest Clementine update earlier today. The tray icon for it did not appear so I restarted the application, then the whole application would not start, then I noticed sound was broken entirely, so I rebooted the system figured it'd been three weeks and I probably needed to anyway. I actually ended up rebooting several times after this due to an unrelated issue with X (that turned out to be my own fault) but audio has not returned. I'm thinking the issue with Clementine is probably unrelated since I've not even tried to start it after my latest reboot and audio is still broken, but I felt I should mention it.

Edit: After a bit more troubleshooting I think the problem is with PulseAudio but I'm still not sure.

The results of cat /proc/asound/cards:

Code: Select all

 0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0xfb430000 irq 50
 1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfb080000 irq 51
Somewhat promising as it lists both HDA Intel and HDA Nvidia. The results of cat /proc/asound/modules:

Code: Select all

 0 snd_hda_intel
 1 snd_hda_intel
Only lists HDA Intel. Most curiously, the results of aplay -l:

Code: Select all

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 1: ALC892 Digital [ALC892 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 8: HDMI 2 [HDMI 2]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 9: HDMI 3 [HDMI 3]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Seems fairly obvious that ALSA is working and can see the ALC892. However doing aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav as root results in silence. I tried messing with the --device setting in vain, I get either an error (aplay: main:828: audio open error: Device or resource busy) or silence.

Also alsamixer lists both card and chip as PulseAudio and just Master volume, which is set to 100.

While my system is not pure Debian Testing (SolydX EE based on Debian testing) I did an update tonight and I have also now lost all sound.

Here is what I downloaded in the update tonight

Debian bug tracking system is here but the only things I can find that are even audio-related are clementine and timidity, neither of which should be capable of causing a problem of this severity. libasound2 hasn't seen an update since early May and pulseaudio hasn't seen one since late April. Given that my uptime earlier today was 22 days, those are well before my last reboot.

As far as I uneducated eyes can see this is an audio package which was upgraded

gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly

There is also timidity but as that is related to midi files I am going to guess that has nothing to do with it. I am going to keep looking, I have posted on the SolydXK forum as well so I get anything there I will pop back on here.

Well I did miss that one, but again my problem is with my audio device itself being greyed-out and even simple wave files won't play. This doesn't seem like any sort of codec problem.

I wish you the best of luck. Though in my case a Twitter acquaintance has informed me that Realtek audio chips have a habit of just going bad all of a sudden while the rest of the motherboard keeps working fine. So this may be a hardware problem. I'm going to keep investigating possible software problems to make sure I've ruled them out, but otherwise I may just have to buy a dedicated sound card.

Check if the correct output is set in PulseAudio Volume Control. Set HDMI to "Off" in the configuration tab if you don't use it.

The only output device to set is Dummy Output. The one thing I can confirm is that as far as PulseAudio is concerned, this computer has no audio output aside from those HDMI ports.

I have exactly the same issue on two separate systems, one an HP desktop and the other being a modern Thinkpad both using KDE.

My desktop has a Realtek chip and if this is a hardware issue, the coincidence of all of these Realtek chips going bad in the last 24 hours is really quite remarkable. By the same token, lspci describes my laptop's audio hardware as follows:

Code: Select all

00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio (rev 21)
Edit - further details:

pavucontrol thinks the sound cards on both systems are "Dummy Output" devices. As a test, I uninstalled pulseaudio and any related software on the desktop. I managed to get

Code: Select all

speaker-test -c 2
to generate sound, but anything from youtube in a browser to a locally-saved video using mpv is silent.

If I check lspci give me

Code: Select all

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)
My audio controls are not greyed out, they are there and functional, if I run clementine, when music plays the small equaliser graph mimic sound being played but just no sound.

I've got a similar problem in Debian testing/sid after upgrading (see Aptitude log below). The strange thing is that audio still works when I start applications as the root user, but as a normal user I get no sound.

cat /etc/debian_version:

Code: Select all

buster/sid
lspci | grep Audio:

Code: Select all

00:0e.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Atom/Celeron/Pentium Processor N4200/N3350/E3900 Series Audio Cluster (rev 0b)

Code: Select all

Browsers now only output to Pulse. MPV is probably set to default output to Pulse as well, but can be set to output direct to ALSA with command line switches / settings in SMplayer. Try playing a video with the output of MPV set to ALSA and see if sound comes out.

It works! Just setting the audio output to ALSA didn't but I was able to get completely correct audio output by using:

Code: Select all

mpv --ao=alsa --audio-device=alsa/sysdefault:CARD=PCH
or

Code: Select all

mpv --ao=alsa --audio-device=alsa/dmix:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
Which are the devices listed as: "'alsa/sysdefault:CARD=PCH' (HDA Intel PCH, ALC892 Analog/Default Audio Device)" and "'alsa/dmix:CARD=PCH,DEV=0' (HDA Intel PCH, ALC892 Analog/Direct sample mixing device)" respectively when I use "mpv --audio-device=help". So that settles it, there's definitely no hardware problem and ALSA is working, so the problem must lie with PulseAudio. But what happened to it and how do I fix it?

Edit: As a possibly relevant aside, I already mentioned that Clementine no longer starts properly (it appears in htop when I look but it uses less memory than usual and the main window never appears) but mpv also acts a bit weird. When I start up with the audio device set to pulse or alsa (which I think just redirects to pulse) it pauses for a noticeable period before beginning to play the video. This is not typical behaviour and when I set the audio device as listed above, this problem goes away too.

I have been able to get sound out of VLC media player by selecting Audio from the menu bar and then selecting Audio Device and then from the list select

HDA INTEL PCH ALC887-VD Analog Default Audio Device

I can then play audio or video track and I can hear the sound

I still have nothing in any web browser

If I try speaker-test -c 2 I still get nothing

aplay -l give

Code: Select all

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC887-VD Analog [ALC887-VD Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 1: ALC887-VD Digital [ALC887-VD Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Confused

Looks like a lot of dbus churn in that one upgrade log that was posted. That's where I would look, Pulse can be connected through dbus ( no idea if it is by default, I typically don't use sound in my VMs ) and that may have been broken in the latest dbus builds.

You will have to look into if Debian uses dbus with Pulse, if the configs got borked if the do, and try to get the configs working again if they need to be edited.

Other than that, it sounds like the other possibility is that the system is not redirecting sound properly to the default card for some reason, this could be due to Pulse / ALSA / or even the kernel or HDA Intel driver settings ( you will have to look these up, there are a ton of different driver options for making different hardware play nice )

The joys of using unstable.
I just attempted a full-upgrade of my Sid system and got this:

Code: Select all

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  kdemultimedia paprefs plasma-pa pulseaudio-module-gconf
Maybe it has something to do with the issue.

I have KDE Plasma 5 DE. Sound still works after upgrade. Here kmix was automatically installed and works now to adjust volume. pavucontrol no longer works.
If you use a DE other than KDE, try using a different audio mixer control until the relevant PulseAudio packages are available again.

See also here - https://forum.siduction.org/index.php?topic=7217.0 . siduction forum is good to check for upgrade warning before any upgrade.

Well it seems I have my answer, it's a bug in TiMidity of all things. The new version takes control of the sound chip before PulseAudio can, effectively locking it out. So I used "systemctl stop timidity" followed by "pulseaudio -k" and wouldn't you know it? Fully restored sound. I'd advise everyone else to try the same to see if you're being affected by this too.

Thanks Serenity, good work.

Simply removed Timidty and now sound works
