[Solved] System freezes every 30 seconds

#1 Post by Dobeedoo »

Hi,
running Debian 9, latest patches & updates from APT. I am experiencing periodic system-wide freezes. Everything seems to halt for a second (maybe little less). For example streamed video stops briefly, while writing something in a text editor, the cursor hangs for the same amount of time etc. No matter what, it gets interrupted every 30 seconds. This is really very annoying. Does anyone else have this phenomena, or am I the only lucky one? I am almost about to reinstall, but as it being Linux, that should really not be necessary. Does any one know what this is, and what can be done to mitigate it? I don't know where to start looking...

Thanks

Just a quick search, apparently you are not the only one.
http://forums.debian.net/search.php?key ... 30+seconds
Search found 1149 matches: +System +freezes
and
Search found 97 matches: +System +freezes +every +seconds
Not much one can say with out any details , such as what Window Manager you use, or is it a Desktop Environment ? Etc,...

Have you timed it? Is it a precise 30 seconds? What else happens at 30 second intervals? Is this a laptop? Is there some sort of power saver interfering?

System freezes are very often hardware. You may have something showing early signs of failure.

Try booting up a live-CD or USB. Run with it for a couple of days. If the live OS runs without freezes either your hard drive is on the skids or you have a software problem.

Back up anything valuable while you can.

If you do look at the search results, you will notice in most cases some details are needed;
For example:http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? ... ds#p655690
by stevepusser »---snip---Problems like yours can also very often be due to missing non-free firmware, due to it not being included in the standard install. This is a feature of Debian, not a bug. :D If you installed inxi and provided the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -F
this can supply a lot of clues to what might be going on.
DO NOT run it (inxi) as root or sudo, and the -F must be upper-case -F,
Only run something as root, if specifically instructed to do so.

Again, sorry to be redundant, but without any real details and info, everything else is just guess work.
The output in a "dmesg" also might have some info.

But maybe more up-to-date :

Hi,
Yes, I timed it, I tried to look at the /etc/top utility, saw nothing unusual, no spiking cpu or memory. I also used Wireshark to see if the traffic was affected, but couldn't see any evidence related to the freezes.
It is a laptop, no power saving at 30 minute intervals is configured.
Both computer and the disk is quite new, so really hope its not hardware related. To me it feels more like a SW problem, but I'm here because I need help to find out :)

I got a little frustrated and reinstalled Debian 9.4. After installing only basic + gnome, sudo, terminator and chromium I tested again, and problem was now gone. A bit cumbersome perhaps, but for a home system it was probably the fastest solution.
