VLC periodically hangs Debian 9.4 Stretch

#1 Post by 4joeyirosh1 »

Hi!I have installed Debian 9.4 Stretch 64 bit on my machine and use VLC to watch videos.

However, during playback at full screen at times I cannot minimize VLC window and return to desktop even though video keeps playing during this stage.I am forced to key in Ctrl-Alt-Delete that kills the VLC session.

I have enabled logging by selecting Tools -> Preferences -> Select "ALL" -> Advanced -> Logger and set verbosity to Debug.Output file shows this

Please assist.

Please install inxi and provide the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -G
So we can see the video hardware and driver situation on your machine.

Something that also might fix it right off is to disable the hardware acceleration in Input/Codecs in VLC preferences.

Thanks for your response. Here is the output of inxi -G

$ inxi -G
Graphics: Card: Intel Device 5916
Display Server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: N/A
Resolution: 1360x768@59.80hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics 620 (Kabylake GT2)
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 13.0.6

I have also disabled hardware acceleration and I hope it works.

Is Kabylake supported by Stretch's kernel?
OP, have you installed firmware-misc-nonfree?

I have an Intel 630 Coffee Lake GPU, the next generation past Kaby Lake, and have noticed that VLC will hang the whole GUI when I'm using the default kernel modesetting driver and hardware acceleration. Switching to the "intel" driver will fix that, and I can enjoy VLC hardware acceleration for h.264 and h.265 video, but then I get some video glitches in some applications, and Google Earth Pro won't show the world display at all.

I'm pretty sure you're using the modesetting driver--the older inxi in Stretch displays N/A when you are using that.
