SOLVED: MATE - Applications Menu Entries Disappeared

#1 Post by zimbodel »

I have to use Mate as it is the only Window Manager that works on my hardware and is happy with it.

I added a Menu Item in the4 Menu editor and then all the application entries disappeared in the Menu Start Button on the panel.
I tried to reinstall Mate, reset it whatever I could find online but the menu start button on the panel only has Places and System entries.
If I go to preferences and open the Menu editor I see all the Menu entries.

What the heck is up with Mate Menu not to show applications installed on the system, and how do I get it to regenerate all the application menus ?

Thanks

To add:
Where does the mate panel menu launcher read the menu entries from ?
I cannot figure out from which file it reads the program entries from

I found the following in .config but have no clue what all the undo is about ?
And if there is an UNDO ability how do I activate it ?
I checked and the last Undos seem to contain my missing menus
Any idea ??

~/.config/menus$ ls

For whoever had the same problem the solution is to overwrite
mate-applications.menu
with one of the backups, in my case the last one
mate-applications.menu.undo-105

Then delete the panel menu launcher and create it again.
Then yo have all the menus back.

So this is solved.

Good for you. Please edit your first post in this thread and add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the header.. So the other readers would notice already when browsing, that this thread needs no other actions. Or If someone has similar problem, they also benefit from seeing problem solved

thanks for your post, I have been fighting this for a while...
a little clarification please
first: I found my mate-applications.menu file in /etc/xdg/menus but I am clueless as to where to find any backups.
If I delete it will a new one be regenerated?

secondly: where is the panel menu launcher, and how is it recreated?

thanks, Peter
