Relogin or restarts required

Everything about X, Gnome, KDE, ... and everything running on it

Relogin or restarts required

Postby ccapon » 2018-08-31 20:44

In my Gnome session, a message box pops up on a regular basis.

Relogin or restarts required!
Your session is running obsolete binaries or libraries as listed below.
Please consider a relogin or restart of the affected processes!

It pops up regardless of whether my system is up-to-date, whether it was rebooted.
A new one shows up every hour and they stack until acknowledged.

Can anyone tell me what software is responsible for the message or some way to shut it off?

Thanks.

Mixing stable and testing isn't the best way, most people will tell you not to do it. It's better to run either stable or testing. There are a couple links you can read about it.
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianTesting
https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian
viewtopic.php?&t=114130

The FAQ has more info.
https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debi ... .html#s3.1

I don't know how to fix it. Some people might say go ahead and fully switch to testing, some would say reinstall with stable. Whichever you decide, back up any important data right away.

So, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me which software is producing the message? If I knew that, maybe I could track down why it thinks the system is running out-of-date binaries.

No,
You don't even tell us , is your PC i386 or AMD64, ?
It is not a specific package or piece of software, You have packages from Debian stable, Debian testing, and then some are for i386, others are for Amd64,... I think you need to try to copy any data / files that are important to you, and then re-install a clean system, that is the correct architecture . i386, or amd64, and ONLY use packages for your architecture. Read some of the documentation in the links shown in the previous posts.
This might be enlightening: Repo mix-and-match hit parade

These messages are from the needrestart package.
You can simply purge the package, and you should stop getting these messages.

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get purge needrestart

In my case, I accidentally pulled in this package when I installed the docker.io dpkg.
The docker docs explicitly say not to do this, but I just wanted to see what would happen.
I started getting those messages everytime my system ran an unattended-upgrade.

Code: Select all
ronny@pluto:~/vm/bionic64$ sudo apt-cache policy needrestart
needrestart:
  Installed: 3.4-1
  Candidate: 3.4-1
  Version table:
 *** 3.4-1 500
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian sid/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
ronny@pluto:~/vm/bionic64$ sudo apt-cache rdepends needrestart
needrestart
Reverse Depends:
  docker.io
  unattended-upgrades
  needrestart-session
  apt-dater-host
  parl-desktop
  design-desktop
  aptitude-robot

Actually you didn't "fix the problem" you just hid it from yourself.

It's still there but you told the OS not to tell you anymore.

Install debian-goodies and run the command line program checkrestart. You may be surprised what needs a reboot.
