Setting up two monitors on Radeon graphics card

#1 Post by username1029 »

Hi.

I am trying to set up two monitors on my computer, on an AMD Radeon HD 5450 graphics card.
The main monitor is connected by HDMI. The other monitor is connected by DVI.
When both of the monitors are plugged in, the HDMI one works fine - but the DVI monitor screen is black even though it's detected by Xrandr and receives some kind of signal from the computer (it's not in stand-by).

Both monitors are fully functioning. All cables are fully functioning.
All settings are double-checked on both monitors.

I have everything required for it to work, in terms of drivers: firmware-linux-nonfree, firmware-amd-graphics, xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu. All latest version. Running Gallium 0.4 on AMD CEDAR, and XFCE. There are no error messages in dmesg. No Xorg conf file. X has been restarted.

Code: Select all

uname -a
 Linux HOST 4.9.0-8-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 4.9.110-3+deb9u6 (2018-10-08) i686 GNU/Linux

lspci -k
04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
[AMD/ATI] Cedar [Radeon HD 5000/6000/7350/8350 Series]
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. [MSI] Radeon HD 5450
 Kernel driver in use: radeon
 Kernel modules: radeon

glxinfo | grep -i "direct rendering"
 direct rendering: Yes
When I plug in my DVI monitor, the automatic display GUI appears on my main HDMI screen, and it is possible to select multiple monitor configuration. It is then apparent that my main screen stretches, and I can move windows further away to the right - to the area of the DVI screen. The DVI monitor remains black, even though it has a signal of some sort. When I restart the computer and log in the HDMI monitor is active, but the the lightdm login screen is (supposedly) in the DVI window - so I can't see it but I can log in.

Here's my current xrandr output:

Code: Select all

As you can see I have only one screen being sent from Xrandr, Screen 0. It has a resolution of 3840 x 1080 - meaning of course that it is stretched to fill the other monitor. However, no information is sent to the DVI monitor at all, so obviously it's black.

How can I set up a second screen so that I can send screen information to the other monitor? This was set up automatically somehow.

Code: Select all

xrandr --listmonitors

1: +DVI-0 1920/477x1080/268+1920+0 DVI-0

xrandr --listactivemonitors

 1: +DVI-0 1920/477x1080/268+1920+0 DVI-0

I've looked around but I haven't been able to find out how to nicely ask Xrandr to simply send the screen information to the other monitor. How would I go about doing this?

Thanks in advance!

Normally xrandr --auto will refresh your setup. Anyhow, you may have broken EDID in your second monitor, in this case the monitor may get signal it cannot handle. Clues are in Xorg log. Have you verified your DVI port actually works and the cable is good?

HDMI-0 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0
DVI-0 connected 1920x1080+1920+0
Have you tried moving it to the bottom, or a lower resolution? I have a monitor with broken EDID/DDC and it can cause some strange behavior. The largest left to right setup I have been able to make work on one screen is 2048.

Hey guys! Didn't expect two quick replies. Much appreciated.

The current situation is that I once again tried unplugging everything and putting it back again, including the video card.
Both monitors are now active, but the DVI monitor has an extremely blue tint. Since the monitor works fine with VGA, I'm guessing the DVI cable is broken. Here's what an RGB color circle looks like on the two monitors:

Yep! I did that before I dismantled and anti-dismantled everything, but didn't see any difference (probably because I couldn't *see* the difference).

I guess I need to try another cable, or connect the DVI monitor directly to the motherboard (the DVI monitor also has VGA. so does the mobo). It seems I can't use both the graphics card and the monitor outputs motherboard at the same time, however.

Pretty weird, no black but you got it working. I have seen the connectors get loose on radeon cards, cables like VGA or DVI can be kind of heavy, or using an adapter they stick out and it can cause a cracked solder joint if it gets knocked around. Jiggle it, prop it up or screw it down?

That will be a nice setup. I used to use the integrated VGA with an addin board, with the setting enabled in bios called 'surroundview' on this older msi board I am using. That way wasn't workable for me on stretch, but heck you have a newer card and motherboard, tweak it...

Might have to give XFCE a try, looks like it handles two monitors ok.

Yeah, it's pretty strange. I'm still having the blue tint (haven't purchased a new cable), but the screen generally works - even though the way the screens start up could probably be used as a reliable TRNG. Each screen is visible in BIOS, LUKS, and the Lightdm login every other time or so. Then the DVI screen is black after login, and then a few minutes after I've run xrandr --auto it starts up and works fine.

Yeah, it does for a pretty comfortable setup. Quite similar to LXDE since it's very reliable, and not bloated at all, but definitely easier on the eye.

I will vouch for XFCE, it handles 3 or 4 port cards for me fine.

Check the cards dvi connector on the card side, where you can see all the pins elbows. Make sure they're even. I've seen them push back from the connector, easy to see.

I did and it seemed fine. I went and acquired a new cable though, and now it works perfectly. Tremendous workstation.

Thanks for the help, guys.

Mine works when I update the graphics cards I thought it was a bug or something.
