[SOLVED] Debian on Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme: X troubles

#1 Post by adi1334 »

I have installed Debian Testing on a Thinkpad X1 Extreme (nvidia GTX 1050), using the nvidia drivers (390.47), and I get some strange behavior.

X works with the default kernel (was 4.16 on the installation image, upgraded to 4.18.0-2-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.18.10-2 (2018-10-07) x86_64 GNU/Linux), discrete graphics selected in BIOS.

However, it does not work with a different kernel (4.18-rt), or if I install bumblebee (following wiki.debian.org/Bumblebee).

Xorg.0.log is attached.

Some help would be appreciated. Cheers

This is a fragment of successful X log, it looks like I cannot put it all here, but the rest is pretty much more of the same.

The Debian-supplied drivers will update themselves along with the kernel but the version from NVIDIA needs to be manually rebuilt for each new kernel update.

v390.87 is in stretch-backports at the moment so I would try stable with a backported kernel & graphics stack.

The driver (nvidia-driver 390.87-2 actually) was installed from the Debian repository (testing).

The computer is already "in production" so I would rather stick to testing.

I would like to understand what is happening, why the strange behavior, would appreciate any help in doing so. Cheers!

Debian testing is a development branch and not suited to production, it will break regularly because that is what it is for.

Having said that, the freeze is due in a couple of months so you might get away with it, so to speak.

Is nouveau properly blacklisted?
Why bumblebee if it is the only card?
Do you have any X config files?

We could also check the drivers loaded by the kernel:

@dilberts_left_nut:

X works with the default kernel, but NOT with the rt variant with just the nvidia discrete graphics enabled (no bumblebee here).
I would like to use the machine in hybrid mode (therefore I also tried to install bumblebee), but it did not work.

What I could find for a conf file is

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf

Code: Select all

# This xorg.conf.d configuration snippet configures the X server to
# automatically load the nvidia X driver when it detects a device driven by the
# nvidia-drm.ko kernel module. Please note that this only works on Linux kernels
# version 3.9 or higher with CONFIG_DRM enabled, and only if the nvidia-drm.ko
# kernel module is loaded before the X server is started.

Section "Files"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/linux"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
EndSection

Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    MatchDriver "nvidia-drm"
    Driver "nvidia"
EndSection
As far as https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers is concerned, nouveau should be blacklisted automatically (and I recall seeing this somewhere, but can't find it now on my system)

@Head_on_a_Stick
I am aware of the nature of testing. Have been using testing for years (as a user) without major problems for years on other machines.

Did you remove the xorg configuration file before trying bumblebee?

Did the display work with bumblebee and the non-rt kernel?

Have you tried the simpler xorg configuration file detailed in the Manual Configuration section of the Debian wiki page for the blobby NVIDIA drivers?

Why did you not try a simple search before posting here?

I just did: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi ... e-nvidia-/

The display did not work with bumblebee either.

I did not remove any xorg.conf file (well, initially I was looking for it in /etc/X11 like in the old times). Would that be the one I listed?

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf

I did not use anything to generate any xorg.conf so I just assumed if I do not touch anything I should not delete anything.

In light of the link you posted (sorry, didn't search, did not expect the rt kernel to be the problem), I guess my question is rather why bumblebee does not work.
I don't really care for using nvidia-driver (which works with only discrete graphics), can probably also live on nouveau. But I do want to use the hybrid solution and I need the rt kernel.

Will report later after I try the nouveau approach.

why would you expect bumblebee to work if the nvidia driver does not work in a normal rt environment?

Because that nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf file is forcing the NVIDIA card to be used, this is not how bumblebee works and there is a note to that effect on the Debian wiki page to which you have already linked.

Re: Debian Testing on Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme: X troubles

#15 Post by adi1334 »

Tried using nouveau drivers, X works but no suspend, no brightness controls out of the box, and did not manage to set up hybrid graphics with bumblebee.

So I am back trying to make nvidia driver work with bumblebee (it does work on discrete setting).

Following the debian wiki. BUT no luck. Same behavior (log attached again). I do have one question though. It says in the log that:

Code: Select all

Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
However, the bumblebee configuration packages are in "/etc/bumblebee/"
Of course, I might be totally naive here, but ... I do not understand (not enough technical expertise), so could somebody explain, please? Or link me up to the proper explanation. Cheers.

Later edit: from what I can figure from the log, the Intel driver should be loaded, but it is not (and thus the failure to find suitable framebuffer device?) .

Maybe I'm missing something, but why would you expect intel driver to get loaded, when lspci didn't list any intel graphics device?

Why bumblebee if it is the only card?

This is an Optimus laptop. As far as I understand, when hybrid graphics is enabled, nvidia piggybacks on intel integrated card. Or somesuch thing.

I want to use Bumblebee (Optimus) so that I get some power saving features (battery life is on the short side with nvidia on all the time).

So I am trying to get it to work. I TURN ON the Hybrid graphics in BIOS. Followed Debian wiki to the best of my knowledge. I must be missing something. So maybe Debian user forums can help.

lspci in hybrid mode *does* detect both cards. Yet X won't start.

Well, like I said I might have missed it/ It's kind of a confusing thread. , where did you show the two cards with the ID instructions on the nvidiadriver wiki page?

I looked up Thinkpad X1 Extreme, and found a page or two at lenovo, didn;t see the word hybrid, or optimus.

p.s. thanks for using testingall those yrs, hope you are reporting a lot of bugs, especially anything that would delay buster going stable on time.

I also looked, did not find much, so I asked here.

I followed the Debian Bumblebee wiki (https://wiki.debian.org/Bumblebee).

Installed everything, made sure -- as far as I can tell -- that no xorg.conf was created by nvidia settings, then rebooted, set the display to Hybrid mode in BIOS, booted ... and no X.
Checked by lspci that I do have both video cards active, looked at X log, googled stuff, asked for help here. In a confusing way, likely.

One of the problems with Nvidia seems to be that the drivers won't build or work on the rt kernel. I have heard that people that needed a lower latency kernel seemed to be happy with the Liquorix kernel, at least for audio processing, and the Nvidia drivers build fine on that kernel.
