Lenovo Legion Y530-15 multi-monitor setup - X problems

Postby Lignar » 2018-10-30 14:53

Hello,
I've recently bought a Lenovo Legion Y530-15 laptop with Nvidia Optimus (GeForce 1050Ti Mobile and Intel hybrid) and I'd like to use it with Debian Stretch in a multi-monitor setup. On fresh install plugging an external monitor does nothing, so I guess sockets are connected directly to nvidia card. Bumblebee doesn't seem to support desktop across multiple monitors in that case. The only way appears to be disabling the Intel Card and using nvidia only and I can't do that in boot. I don't really care about suspending and battery life as long as I can plug in two monitors.

I tried following the official guides (https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers and https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers/Optimus) but it's not working - startx hangs.

Here's what I've done: fresh Debian Stretch netinstall with Gnome. apt update && apt upgrade (all sources are main contrib non-free) followed by reboot due to kernel update.
apt install linux-headers-amd64 nvidia-driver
apt install x11-xserver-utils (already installed)
create xorg.conf
Code: Select all
/etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Section "Module"
    Load "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "1:0:0"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

create desktop files
Code: Select all
/usr/share/gdm/greeter/autostart/optimus.desktop
/etc/xdg/autostart/optimus.desktop:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=Optimus
Exec=sh -c "xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0; xrandr --auto"
NoDisplay=true
X-GNOME-Autostart-Phase=DisplayServer

reboot

Now Debian hangs during boot without even cursor flashing. I can switch to tty2 but can't go back to 1. Running startx on tty2 also hangs. Then I can switch to tty3 but can't go back to 1 or 2.

Ubuntu somehow works with nvidia (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Gaming-Laptops-Knowledge-Base/Installing-Ubuntu-18-xx-on-the-Legion-Y530/ta-p/4187251) and multiple monitors but I'd really prefer to use Debian.
I could really use some help.

I tried to find what you said you did, but did not find these instructions on either debian wiki link you posted?

apt install linux-headers-amd64 nvidia-driver
apt install x11-xserver-utils (already installed)
create xorg.conf

If you have optimus system, nvidiadriver page says see bumblebee page.
Note: if this lspci command returns more than one line of output, you have an Optimus (hybrid) graphics chipset, and the instructions on this page do not apply to you. Check the Bumblebee page instead.

Unless I am reading it wrong, the packages you would install would be 'bumblebee primus' on the free nouveau driver, or 'bumblebee-nvidia primus' for the proprietary nvidia driver.

The Arch wiki has some troubleshooting tips for Bumblebee that are worth a try: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/bumblebee

I think the OP wants to use just the NVIDIA card alone (without Optimus/Bumblebee) but there is no firmware switch for the Intel card and using an Xorg configuration file to force the NVIDIA driver results in a black screen.

But I may be wrong, the OP is not the clearest.

@OP: have you tried disabling kernel mode setting?

Yeah, there is a lot of documentation available, but I sure don;t want to wade thru it... looks like David Airlie figured it out?

The Arch wiki does have a section about just their situation--apparently the fixes worked for another Lenovo laptop, so hopefully it will for theirs.

The first line is from the first link, specifically https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsD ... ion_375.66
The other steps are here: https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsD ... er_Scripts - switching the Intel card off and using nvidia only.

I tried using bumblebee but from bumblebee project wiki (https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/Bu ... itor-setup):
Optimus laptops have two video chips: an integrated Intel and a discrete nVidia one. If the port (DisplayPort / HDMI / VGA) is wired to the Intel chip, you do not need to do anything special to get external monitors to work.
When the port is wired into the nvidia chip, you cannot currently expand the screen over monitors. The monitor may still be used as extra screen (with no desktop running on it) or to run the full desktop on it (with no output on the Intel LVDS output, a.k.a. "the laptop display").

The second part seems to be my case. I'd like to run desktop on laptop display and external monitor sumultanously. This should be possible with xrandr (my second link).

stevepusser wrote:The Arch wiki has some troubleshooting tips for Bumblebee that are worth a try: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/bumblebee

This has something I haven't tried yet:
Output wired to the NVIDIA chip
On some notebooks, the digital Video Output (HDMI or DisplayPort) is hardwired to the NVIDIA chip. If you want to use all the displays on such a system simultaneously, the easiest solution is to use intel-virtual-output, a tool provided in the xf86-video-intel driver set, as of v2.99. It will allow you to extend the existing X session onto other screens, leveraging virtual outputs to work with the discrete graphics card

But searching xf86-video-intel for stretch points only to https://packages.debian.org/stretch/x11 ... ideo-intel and here we can read:
This package is built from the X.org xf86-video-intel driver module.
The use of this driver is discouraged if your hw is new enough (ca. 2007 and newer). You can try uninstalling this driver and let the server use it's builtin modesetting driver instead.

Edit: gonna check out KMS now. Hmmm seems I didn't stumble upon the reverse PRIME section until now

Edit2: disabling kms didn't work, but after a couple reboots and blacklisting ideapad-laptop (for wifi) I actually got Xsession on my external monitor! The laptop screen is stuck on partial dmesg output from boot, though. Gnome Displays show only the external monitor/

So now it seems I have X working on nvidia sockets, using configuration from initial post + blacklist ideapad_laptop, but my laptop screen is not recognized by system, making it unusable without external monitor.

Debian does discourage use of the intel driver, but many users, including many of those elite Arch users, still use and prefer it. You can add /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf with the contents:

Code: Select all
Section "Device"
   Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
   Driver      "intel"
#  Option      "AccelMethod" "uxa"  #could also use the default "sna"
   Option      "TearFree"     "true"
EndSection

and reboot to have the system use that driver.

Should the first Option be commented out? Either way, after adding this file (so now I have /etc/X11/xorg.conf from initial post + your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf) neither laptop screen nor external monitor work. Booting stops with cursor flashing.
