iBook Xserver problems

#1 Post by bmbeeman »

I set up Xserver correctly and installed a GUI at installation, but when I boot up, it says xserver couldn't be started, and it presents me with a command line. I've tried startx, but I get the same result, any ideas?

Still isn't working, and I took care to make sure all of my setting were correct, any other reason why Xserver doesn't like me? (lol)

What desktop environment / window manager are you using?
What display manager are you using?

the default, whatever the Debian installer installs by default.

Do the following. You will get either no response or the location of files that are loaded on your computer. I'm trying to figure out what is loaded.

$ which gdm
$ which kdm
$ which gnome-session
$ which startkde

$ which gdm
/usr/bin/gdm

$ which gnome-session
/usr/bin/gnome-session

these were the only commands that returned results.

At the terminal prompt, do xinit /usr/bin/gnome-session and let me know what happens. It would help tremendously if you would post the *exact* error message that is generated when x-windows bombs.

Do I understand correctly that you have *never* successfully started up x-windows since installing Debian? Have you previously installed a different Linux distro on this computer where x-windows *did* work properly? Have you tried posting to lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/?
