xfce 4.12 removed maya2017 lost Notification & Indicators

#1 Post by kbdeamon »

Hi, I am a Linux idiot and I a did a dumb thing.

While running Debian Jessie, I removed maya 2017 that I installed using alien.

Code: Select all

sudo apt remove adlm*
After that I lost my network Notification and Indicator icons, Windows drives (this is a duel boot system) that used to display on the desktop disappeared and Firefox Quantum started to leave trailing windows when being moved. I am not able to attach an image of my "Session and Startup" but I do not see any Items in my Notification and Indicator properties. I also do not see any Notification or Indicator check boxes in "Session and Startup".

I tried the below steps but non worked. Can anyone please give me some suggestions?
(1) restarting the panel -- DID NOT WORK

Code: Select all

xfce4-panel -r
(2) renaming the session folders in .cache and .config -- DID NOT WORK
(3) creating a new user to see if this is a profile issue -- DID NOT WORK in that I am receiving the same results
(4) this thread did not help http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? ... or#p626487 and neither did anything that I googled https://askubuntu.com/questions/517467/ ... xfce-panel (cant even find these indicators on my version) -- DID NOT WORK
(5) Upgrading to Debian Stretch 9.6 -- DID NOT WORK
(7) Looking for gnome related apps gives me the below but I do not understand how this relates to the panel

Code: Select all

~$ find . -name nm-applet 2>/dev/null
./.gconf/apps/nm-applet

Code: Select all

debian:/etc/xdg/autostart$ ls
at-spi-dbus-bus.desktop
gnome-keyring-pkcs11.desktop
gnome-keyring-secrets.desktop
gnome-keyring-ssh.desktop
gsettings-data-convert.desktop
light-locker.desktop
nm-applet.desktop
orca-autostart.desktop
polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.desktop
print-applet.desktop
pulseaudio.desktop
xfce4-clipman-plugin-autostart.desktop
xfce4-notes-autostart.desktop
xfce4-power-manager.desktop
xfce4-volumed.desktop
xfsettingsd.desktop
xscreensaver.desktop
(6) Attempting to reinstall adlm* -- DID NOT WORK result is below

Code: Select all

root@debian:/etc/xdg/autostart# apt-get install adlm*

Perhaps the glob was a bad idea? Maya is cool though...

The autoremove statement in the output suggests that you have fallen foul of the problem described in this thread:

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=104157

I would try re-installing the desktop task:

Code: Select all

# apt install task-xfce-desktop
Upgrading from jessie to stretch in such a random and slipshod fashion was probably a really bad idea btw.

I'm not a regex expert, but runnning that command

Code: Select all

$ apt -s remove adlm*
was pretty weird. Looks like it matches everything with adl in the name instead of adlm at the beginning...

and then you ran

Code: Select all

apt-get install adlm*
wow, that is really bad thinking. Then you tried an os upgrade? or was that before you ran another weird wildcard command? Sorry, we have all been there, it's just part of the learning curve. The point is don't use wildcards with apt unless you're real sure what they do. Always read before hitting enter.

So you now have a broken debian stretch? Maybe it would be easiest to back up the data and reinstall? or look in the history for apt and reinstall all the pkgs you removed?

p.s.
I tried to look up https://packages.debian.org/search?keyw ... xnetserver but it DID NOT WORK.

Yes, those were definitely dumb moves; boy do I regret them now. I was trying to follow this https://gist.github.com/borgfriend/b834 ... bf780a4994 which is installation geared. But in the mean time, do I have to uninstall the xfce to re-install it or do I just reinstall right on top of the existing xfce?

Yea dumb. It looks like the system is somewhat broken at this point. Probably easier to re-install. The problem is that this Debian came per-installed and the machine is dual boot on M.2 nVME so there is that to consider in doing a complete reinstall. I am thinking that you did not find adlmflexnetserver because it may be some pre-install thing that the vendor put in (i'll talk to them but while they install Linux it is really not supported ). :-(

Just run my suggested command, it will install anything that's missing.

this got me some of the way there. Thanks a million!!!!

The networking notification is now back but it is showing many connections and i do not really see the networking icon just the notification. The garbage can is still missing.

I think that there is some sort of interference between the NetworkManger and manual configuration in /etc/network/interfaces so I commented out eht0 but it does not seem like the Notification icon updates that even after restart. I also tried to edit the connections via nmtui and that is not resolving the issue of showing multiple connection items when I only have 1. Not sure if there is anything more that I can do. Re-install may be inevitable.

Code: Select all

@debian:/etc/network$ cat interfaces
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

source /etc/network/interfaces.d/*

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# eth0
#auto eth0
#allow-hotplug eth0
#iface eth0 inet dhcp

Hi all, I re-installed the system and got the trash bin back as well as the network notification.
