screen FUBARRED

#1 Post by skypuppy »

Running Debian stretch.
After running "apt update" and then "apt dist-upgrade," icons disappeared. Logical screen size no longer matches physical screen size. Right-clicking on the screen no longer pulls up the settings window. System only 30% usable as EVERYTHING must be started 'by hand' using AltF2. I'd like my system back, please. Dozens of web searches shows this has been happening to people for over 6 years. I call this not a major bug, but a DISASTROUS bug! Tried several of the suggestions in those posts with zero success. Creating a new user and logging into it produces the same results, so that was half a day wasted.

Upon initial boot, the Psensor window comes up in the "logical center" like it is supposed to, but physically it's center is on the far left of the physical screen. If that is germane.

I've too many changes since the last backup so that's not an option.

Today is the 4th day of trying to recover my Debian stretch system.

Help, please!!!

Does your computer have a make and model, or can you give the basic specs?

Do you have a GPU? If so which?

Have you tried booting to an older kernel?

At sometime in the past have you done manual alterations to xorg or monitor modes? I suspect there was a user edit that was unable to be properly merged and preserved.

You are using proprietary video drivers?

no previous changes that I know of and I'm the only one on this machine. nvidia drivers are from the Debian stable repositories.

...there you go! If it were me I'd purge back to current nouveau. So here I punt...
So if you need the nvidia drivers, someone here knows to get you going.

Going back to the kernel before if it was just upgraded is the first step.

Kernel did not upgrade. Neither did the nvidia drivers. It came back immediately with zero actions - or they were so fast I did not see them.
This morning, I had synaptic reinstall the nvidia-drivers but that made no change, either.

It is hard to take a post seriously when they refuse to give any use full details,....
There is a program/script, called "inxi" https://packages.debian.org/stretch/misc/inxi
Package: inxi (2.3.5-1)
full featured system information script

Inxi is a system information script that can display various things about your hardware and software to users in an IRC chatroom or support forum. It runs with the /exec command in most IRC clients.
It is usefull, maybe install it, and give some of the info asked for.

The Nvidia proprietary drivers in stable non-free were just upgraded from 384.111 to 390.87 for some reason--probably security, and "inxi -Fxxz" will tell us if you got a good build or are having to use vesa mode for some reason, plus will provide info so we don't have to play Sherlock Holmes to discover it.

Not sure what you mean by this, please post the output of

Code: Select all

xrandr
Which desktop environment is this? Have you tried re-installing the desktop task?

Nouveau still works for those old cards.

NVIDIA may be complete bastards but at least the open source community looks after their own.

EDIT: don't buy NVIDIA!

Well, the Nvidia 390.87 drivers appear to be working correctly.

Is 1920 x 1080 the correct resolution?

It's a 4k monitor but I only put it on 4k for movies. 1080p is the mode I set it to for general computer stuff. The 1050 tears at 4k on computer stuff.
