Before Debian 9 I didn't know this issue since GNOME always just placed my Nautilus window according to its last position. This is what I normally want. I usually position my Nautilus window on the right half of the screen. When I switched to Stretch it was an issue for a short time but I think after an update it worked again like that. So, if I remember it properly I didn't actually do anything about it. But since Buster I have this issue again. I can use "super"+"right arrow" to place the Nautilus window like I want it but I wonder if there is an easy way to teach GNOME where and how big to position the window when I start Nautilus. (In the past I could just tell Nautilus to memorise the settings used right now via an option in the menu and afterwards it took those exact properties as the default when starting the application.)
