(SOLVED) Unable to install Tor Browser on Buster

Postby Mr. Lumbergh » 2019-08-02 04:59

Hello,

I'm attempting to install Tor Browser and it's giving me issues. I tried following the instructions on the Debian Wiki: https://wiki.debian.org/TorBrowser#Debian_.22experimental.22.
Since Stretch was the last version for which there's an official process on the Wiki, I first tried the "experimental" install, and when that didn't work, tried the Stretch install. Both tried returned the error
Code: Select all
package torbrowser-launcher is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'torbrowser-launcher' has no installation candidate

When that failed, I downloaded the tarball from the Tor.org page, and tried to install according to the guide at https://www.howtogeek.com/423866/how-to-install-and-use-the-tor-browser-on-linux/. This created additional issues for me though; when I try to register the app, I get a popup button with the error
Code: Select all
The Tor Browser Bundle should not be run as root.  Exiting.

I can verify the files have been unpacked:
Code: Select all
root@HAL9000:/opt/tor-browser_en-US# ls
Browser  start-tor-browser.desktop

However, when I drop back to user and try it again, I get:
Code: Select all
lumbergh@HAL9000:~$ ./start-tor-browser.desktop --register-app
bash: ./start-tor-browser.desktop: No such file or directory

so I sort of wind up in a loop where I can't run it if I'm root, but can't locate the files if I'm not. Any guidance on helping solve this is appreciated.

The easiest way to do this is to simply download Tor Browser, extract it and you are done. No need to install it...

Also it is the best way.
The myth that anything not from Debian is bad and going to break your system isn't true(I am not recommending anyone just go and download anything they want to but if it is a reputable source/developer you are taking a lot less of a risk).

When you skip getting it from Debian and go to the source you are guaranteed to get the latest security fixes and updates right away.

No disrespect to the Debian team I just prefer some things come from the source and not a middle man.

Your initial problem was not being able to find torbrowser-launcher for Buster.

It's in buster-backports: https://packages.debian.org/buster-back ... r-launcher

Tor Browser still "comes from the source", but this makes it easy to set up.

Please mark this thread [SOLVED] if that works. Thanks!

If the OP had searched, they would have found this recent topic:
http://forums.debian.net/search.php?keywords=Tor+Browser+on+Buster

You can download it , unzip the file in a dir, and set it up, not exactly rocket science:
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=142636&p=702309

I have it on Debian testing/bullsey and it works fine.

My point was more geared toward not installing something that is supposed to make you anonymous and leave such a trail.

You get the updates a lot faster which is very important,

And there is really nothing to "set up". It's a tar archive that you extract and run it from the directory that it makes.
There is clear instructions how to do so on the website.

Code: Select all
t's in buster-backports: https://packages.debian.org/buster-backports/torbrowser-launcher

Page says no such package.
Besides not making any sense why it would have to be backported to stable

Code: Select all
https://www.torproject.org/dist/torbrowser/8.5.4/tor-browser-linux64-8.5.4_en-US.tar.xz

I shouldn't have made it sound like it's ok to just go download things from where ever you feel like either.(I think my post sounds like that a little)

So you didn't read how torbrowser-launcher gets the browser "from the source" and keeps it updated?

I was able to directly download the deb from that page--unless Debian is in the process of removing the package, I think you should be able to do the same.

It's still there for me in the USA..

Code: Select all
torbrowser-launcher (0.3.1-2~bpo10+1) buster-backports; urgency=medium

  * Rebuild for buster-backports.

torbrowser-launcher (0.3.1-2~bpo9+1) stretch-backports; urgency=medium

  * Rebuild for stretch-backports.

That cured what ailed me, thank you Steve. This also allowed me to fix another issue I didn't know I had; my first installation attempt overwrote my sources.list completely rather than just adding the experimental repos as I thought, so that obviously needed to be reconfigured.

I did search; that thread didn't come up at the time. The search keyed in on "browser" and most of what I saw were folks trying to work out issues with other browsers.

Anyways, thanks everyone that chipped in to help.

Adding the Experimental repos to Stable is generally a pretty bad idea, unless your idea of fun is trying to repair a broken system. :(

The experimental repositories have a default pin value of 1 and so packages from there need to be targeted explicitly for installation and will not be updated from there unless pinned higher.
