nvidia drivers and xorg problems
nvidia drivers and xorg problems
I have been trying to install the nvidia drivers from the repositories of Stretch. My objective is to be able to tweak my gpu with nvidia-settings for gaming and use it with CUDA (and be able to log in my GUI).
First of all, I have done this before, in Kali and Debian 10, but I don't know why on my installation of Debian 9 (my main OS) it has been impossible. On the former two, I just used this guide: https://docs.kali.org/general-use/insta ... kali-linux
Again, with Kali and Debian 10 I didn't have to do anything more. Now, with Debian 9, it always happens that after reboot (or restarting lightdm) I get stuck in a login loop. I have tried a number of ways to fix this: deleting xorg.conf; creating one manually or with nvidia-xconfig (this always leads to blank screen, unable to start lightdm); purging everything nvidia; installing nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver (according to the Debian wiki to install nvidia drivers, these are the ones for my GPU, but again, I didn't have any problems in Kali and Debian 10); purging and reinstalling xserver-xorg and nvidia-driver, more than a couple of times.
I'm at my wit's end here, I'm thinking about starting with a fresh installation of Debian 10 as my main OS. But I want to understand what's going on and try to fix it. I'm more than happy to provide any info and logs you need to help me figure out this.

Re: nvidia drivers and xorg problems
You wouldn't need a fresh installation of 10, you should be able to upgrade in place.I'm at my wit's end here, I'm thinking about starting with a fresh installation of Debian 10 as my main OS
You are referring to 2 separate systems?First of all, I have done this before, in Kali and Debian 10
Having a Debian 10 system and installing kali?
Or believing Kali Linux is synonyms with Debian 10?
Re: nvidia drivers and xorg problems
That can give a lot of problems of compatibility, as far as I know. I prefer to install a whole new system.djk44883 wrote:You wouldn't need a fresh installation of 10, you should be able to upgrade in place.
Yes.djk44883 wrote:You are referring to 2 separate systems?
I'd rather stay on topic.
Re: nvidia drivers and xorg problems
That's why I was asking, for clarification. I've fought with nvidia, At least 2 different systems? I mean stretch and buster aren't a multi boot.albsanrom wrote:

So you first used a guide for a derivative of your system to install drivers which weren't for your hardware?in Kali and Debian 10, but I don't know why on my installation of Debian 9 (my main OS) it has been impossible. On the former two, I just used this guide: https://docs.kali.org/general-use/insta ... kali-linux
because this isn't the same as instructed in the guide you referenced.installing nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver (according to the Debian wiki to install nvidia drivers, these are the ones for my GPU, but again, I didn't have any problems in Kali and Debian 10)
Other packages in the system between 9 - 10 are at different versions. It works in one not the other, have you seen... https://wiki.debian.org/NewInBuster or https://www.debian.org/releases/buster/ ... ew.en.html
Even though the video cards might be the same, the systems aren't exactly. I have dell laptops and discovered they do slightly make them their own, for example. If a desktop, motherboard vendors may have variations and chipsets versions.
If this isn't an issue, I'm not at an nvida system, so this is just "things to consider" as I can't verify exact specifics.
Instead of letting nvidia-xconfig or nvidia-settings create xorg.conf I'd take the parts specific to nvida I need and copy 'n past them and save to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d maybe 60-nvidia.conf Not sure if it will change much, but seem to be the way to go.
I have a system running Debian stable since at least wheezy - change sources.list apt-get dist-upgrade (well, there's a bit more to it). Wheezy, Jessie, Stretch and now Buster when Debian says stable - that's what they mean! The whole re-install was the biggest issue I had with Linux Mint. Who has time or cares to reconfigure your system routinely? If I wanted to constantly adjust something and restart, un/re-install hoping it would fix anything I'd probably use a windows. My media PC running Bullseye stays up for a couple weeks, unless the rare upgrade ask for it - issue free. But that's meThat can give a lot of problems of compatibility, as far as I know. I prefer to install a whole new system.

Re: nvidia drivers and xorg problems
Exactly, I totally agree but this magic capability seems to be lost on most.djk44883 wrote: Who has time or cares to reconfigure your system routinely?
Re: nvidia drivers and xorg problems
I don't want to completely hijack off-topic here... when I realized I've gone 4 "generations" upgrading, at some point does there come a time for a fresh install? There have been some big default changes over time. I've don't things like usrmerge don't want to relearn things with Wayland, but don't use gnome anyhow. I suppose eventually gksudo/root for X or GUI programs will be obsoleted anyhow. My hardware is old, by today's standards it's old... I should start my own topicCwF wrote:Exactly, I totally agree but this magic capability seems to be lost on most.
Re: nvidia drivers and xorg problems
Leaving aside each one's habits with their own personal computer:
Everything using the same hardware. I had Kali and now Debian 10 on a flash drive.djk44883 wrote:At least 2 different systems? I mean stretch and buster aren't a multi boot.
Already tried that, but I named it 20-nvidia.conf (I don't understand this, but I read that this method worked for some people). It had the same effect as making the changes on xorg.conf—namely, a cursor flickering on the blank screen, sometimes with a message of error that lightdm couldn't initialize. And I think that looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log there was an error about 'screen not found'. I could try everything again, but I don't know if it would help.djk44883 wrote:Instead of letting nvidia-xconfig or nvidia-settings create xorg.conf I'd take the parts specific to nvida I need and copy 'n past them and save to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d maybe 60-nvidia.conf

Re: nvidia drivers and xorg problems
The Debian wiki says to first install and run nvidia-detect on Stretch to learn what driver version is recommended.
I would follow the Debian wiki instead of the instructions for Kali! You haven't even said if you successfully installed the compilers and kernel headers first, which is the most common missing step. The nvidia-driver build also clearly errors out in the terminal if something goes wrong, but you haven't said if that succeeded or not, either.

OK, first of all, my /etc/apt/sources.list:
Identification:
nvidia-detect:
Linux headers:
I know how this is going to end...
nvidia-driver:
If I do sudo reboot... And I'm in the login loop again.
How cool is this? I'm writing this thanks to w3m! What can I do now?

Re: nvidia drivers and xorg problems
ok, so now I'm getting near the end of what ever usefulness I never had...
Just tossing this out - any info in /var/log/lightdn/lightdn.log[.old] although your issue is most likely X and nvidia.
This is not recommended, way back, I couldn't get nvidia-driver to work. I surrendered and installed nvidia's own driver NVIDIA Driver Download it worked, since I didn't know what I did, every kernel upgrade, I learnt I had to reinstall it.
Code: Select all
sometimes with a message of error that lightdm couldn't initialize.

Re: nvidia drivers and xorg problems
Well, the driver is building and installing correctly, so it's not that. Can you install inxi and tell us what
says about your graphic hardware and drivers?
I hope you never try to mix those buster-backport repos you have commented out with Stretch. Do you remember why they are there?
Code: Select all
inxi -G

Re: nvidia drivers and xorg problems
There seem to be issues specifically with lightdm and nvidia driver.
Some answers insist /etc/X11/xorg.conf with a minimum https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... =922679#17 from this bug report. From other post, may not be limited to include light-locker.
Searching lightdm nvidia might lend some fresh clues

Re: nvidia drivers and xorg problems
OK, that's it. I've solved it. You can see from lspci -nn | egrep -i "3d|display|vga" before that I actually have two graphics cards, one integrated Intel, and one dedicated NVIDIA. So I have installed this and that's it, now I'm able to use my GUI.
Actually, a quick look at (optirun) nvidia-smi:
And you can see Xorg is using nvidia for the display manager, isn't it?
The only trouble is that it isn't as automatic as in Windows, I need to use optirun to run applications with nvidia. And now I don't understand how Kali and Debian 10 do it. I'll keep investigating.

Re: nvidia drivers and xorg problems
VICTORY! I had skimmed over something, concerning OPTIUM drivers for nvidia - didn't think it relevant.
NVIDIA support has a line to add to lightdm.conf ,shell script for "switching" displays
Yes, why, "it" doesn't load intel drivers and take off from there instead? who knows.

Not really.albsanrom wrote:OK, that's it. I've solved it.
I can get cuda with hashcat going (for instance), but everything else remains the same (I think, I hope). Runnning nvidia-settings warns me in a window:
Code: Select all
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your
X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the
X server.
With respect to gaming, I don't think steam is running on my nvidia. I don't know why. Also, when I go in and out of sleep mode I can't get nvidia running anymore... It's a mess!
I didn't think I wasn't using my nvidia card at all on Linux until now. Do the nouveau drivers even work? They always return errors on boot with every new installation, but I always shut them down somehow.
I don't think I'm ever going to buy NVIDIA cards in the near future. I'll have to stick this out, and game on Windows :/

Re: nvidia drivers and xorg problems
It may be too messed up by now to fix. I wish you had let us know from the very start that you had a laptop, then we would have suspected an Optimus system.
If you want to try MX Linux, which is built on top of a Stretch base, we have an Nvidia installer that detects an Optimus system and automatically sets up Bumblebee, the correct Nvidia driver, and the 32-bit libraries on 64-bit for you. Just don't choose the option to install the driver from the test repo right now, we have to fix something in that. Just stick with the driver from Stretch for now.
