Black screen after updating from Debian 9 to 10 (SOLVED)

Postby pug » 2019-08-24 04:59

Hello :)

I updated my Debian 9 installation to 10 using this guide https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cyberc ... uster/amp/

Now after booting I see a black screen. I already tried this from Debian wiki but don't work.

Code: Select all
apt-get purge nvidia.
apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg
apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
killall Xorg
reboot
X -configure

This is the configuration backup before update
Code: Select all
lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID:  Debian
Description:  Debian GNU/Linux 9.9 (stretch)
Release:  9.9
Codename:  stretch

uname -mrs
Linux 4.9.0-9-amd64 x86_64

The new kernel installed after upgrade is linux-image-4.19.0-5-amd64, and looks like the black screen is a bug from this Kernel:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=930777#15

Code: Select all
uname -mrs
Linux 4.19.0-5-amd64 x86_64

Thank you for reading

Also tried adding i915.fastboot=1 to kernel option in 4.19.0-5-amd64 kernel, and the black screen was solved but in Login screen the notebook was freeze.
This is the source: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... =930777#15

Found this bug that seems to be related:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109215

There, the kernel option "i915.fastboot=1" is suggested to solve the problem.

I tried this on my system and it solved the problem.

So finally I choose for use the previous kernel from grub menu and It's working fine now, no black screen or freeze and my system is full updated with Debian Buster.

Code: Select all
lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID:   Debian
Description:   Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)
Release:   10
Codename:   buster

Old Kernel (Work fine)
Code: Select all
uname -a
Linux 4.9.0-9-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.168-1+deb9u5 (2019-08-11) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Code: Select all
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
GRUB_DEFAULT="1>2"
sudo update-grub
